Spend, spend, spend

It's been a long time since I've updated. I haven't really had much to talk about. I was on vacation last week, and on Tuesday night, I decided that since I had no commitments for my vacation, I would spend my entire vacation in my apartment watching TV and firmly avoiding all housework.

On Wednesday morning, I remembered that I had forgotten to stock up on junk food or any kind of food at all, so I had to leave the apartment in search of sustenance. Since I was going to be out anyway, I figured I might as well do some other running around at the same time.

And that was the beginning of the nightmare for my bank account.

(lots of cuts, long post.)

On Wednesday, I went to a shoe store recommended by adventurat called "Carol's Wide shoes". It was nice to be in a store where I could try on several shoe styles. Shoes are pricey there, but it's worth it if I can find something that fits. They didn't have my size in one of the styles that I wanted to try, and in the end I bought two pair of shoes that, combined, totaled the same as the shoes I didn't try on.

I bought a pair of dressy Trotters shoes that have a low heel and will be nice with skirts and pants, and a pair of "ballet flats". I'll have to get an arch support pad for the ballet flats, I think but I can worry about that later.

On Thursday, I ventured forth again, not quite sure what I would do, but I would decide along the way. As I looked out the bus window, I saw the Staples store, and remembered that I really needed a new chair for my computer room, since the one I currently had was getting very uncomfortable to sit on for long periods of time. Since I am about to start another nanowrimo novel, and I record TV shows on the computer and watch them there, I need a comfortable chair to sit in.

I sat in several chairs at Staples, trying to make up my mind. In the end, I settled on a high-back "executive" chair. I like the high back, because it means that I can lean back comfortably when I'm watching TV at my computer. Ah, bliss.

I bought the chair on Thursday and arranged for the store to put it together and deliver it. It arrived early Monday morning (today) and I am now getting used to my new chair.

After ordering the chair, I headed out to Wal-mart to buy some foam. I have two storage chests that are sturdy enough for seats, but not very comfortable to sit on. I purchased some 4" thick foam that I will use to make cushions for the chests.

On Friday, I left the apartment with a purpose in mind: purchase a microwave oven. Buying a microwave was my goal early on in the week, but getting it home on the bus is awkward. I had found a couple of reasonably priced microwaves on Wednesday, but decided that I would go back for them at a later time.

On Friday, I went to a different location of the store that carried the microwave I wanted, one that was closer to home, and would therefore result in a shorter taxi ride. I was in luck, since they had the microwave in stock. I purchased it and then called for a taxi. I also purchased a yoga ball which I have inflated, but not sat on yet. I think I need to inflate it a bit more yet, and I'll do that later.

Getting the microwave set up was a bit of a challenge. I had already determined that it would fit on top of the fridge but it was a little awkward to lift up there. However, I succeeded, and celebrated my victory by having microwaved "baked potatoes" for supper, and microwave popcorn for an evening snack.

On Saturday, I went looking for one more appliance: a vacuum. My apartment has wood floors so I don't need a really powerful, expensive vacuum, but I do have area rugs and they could stand a vacuuming once in awhile. I went to a nearby shopping mall and checked at Zellers and The Bay for vacuums. I was surprised to see that they had Dyson vacuums at Zellers. I've heard good things about Dyson, but they were more expensive than I had budgeted, and really more vacuum than I need at the moment

I settled on a Dirt Devil Scorpion vacuum, which is a lightweight upright vacuum. I then did some grocery shopping and called a taxi to take me and my purchases home.

I assembled the vacuum and vacuumed two of my area rugs. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the vacuum worked as well as I had hoped and it pulled a lot of dust, dirt, and hair out of the rugs.

On Sunday, I rested. Well, I stayed indoors anyway. Mostly. I got out the slow cooker and prepared a nice beef stew for supper. I plugged the slow cooker in and it started cooking away. I then tried to heat something up in the microwave and promptly blew a fuse. I had suspected that might happen if I ran the microwave and the slow cooker off the same receptacle. Unfortunately, I had not stocked up on fuses of the right amps, so I had to go for a walk in the pouring rain and purchase some. Fortunately, my corner store carries all kinds of fuses, so I was able to get the slow cooker going again fairly quickly.

After that, I did some rearranging of furniture, a little cleaning and a lot of TV watching. My bank account was very happy that I stayed home on Sunday. It thinks the spending spree is over. Poor disillusioned account.

I have one more week of vacation to go. I wonder what exciting things I can do this week, and what "necessities" I should buy?

But first, I must find my bank card. It ran away and hid itself after I came home on Saturday.
