Giving thanks

Nov 23, 2006 12:52

Later tonight, our American uncles will gather around the dinner table, carve some turkey and give thanks to... someone.. God, I guess. A little foolish, I reckon, considering this holiday has something to do about appreciating a specific Indian for teaching the pilgrims how to fish or grow corn, but hey, any excuse to eat a stuffed 20lb birds, pumpkin pies and sweet potatoes sounds good to me.

Anyhow, earlier this week I was thinking about gratitude, and when I remembered that Thanksgiving is today just made me think about it a little more. And although things often feel like crap and I complain a lot of the time, I have a lot to be grateful for. Whether it is intactness of both my lungs or the fact I wasn't ran over by a car (yet). But I guess that the thing I should be most grateful for, and I am saying that with utter seriousness and no cynical tone whatsoever, are my friends. These people give me strength and support whenever I need it (whether I want them to or not), they deal with me when I'm unbearable1, obnoxious or just uncooperative.

I never say it enough. I figure that in a true friendship you don't have to say to the other side "thank you" all the time because some things go without saying, and still - some times it's important to take a short pause and thanks those who are dear to us. So - you know who you are - thank you.
