When I was a little kid I remember hearing people all around me talking about how Dungeons and Dragons was satanic. It wasn’t just D and D it was He-Man, the Smurfs, and of course the most evil My Little Pony and Rainbow Brite. I was maybe in headstart when my dad read a book about all these things being evil and bringing an evil influence in our home. Just like that no more Eternia, no more stupid Gargamel, no more magic, and dragons at all. This would shape me for years, I just didn’t realize it.
I remember playing my first role playing game in seventh grade. It was called paranoia and it was great. I played because it sounded fun, it turned out to be a gateway drug…into Dungeons and Dragons, satan’s tricky device to lure unsuspecting preteens to doing math for fun and generally finding yet another way to be awkward. I was taken with it, and honestly, it didn’t feel like the Devil, but just to be clear that’s how the Devil would do it wouldn’t he?! I hid this fact from my family, my mom would have gotten on to me, and we had just got our comic books back because my brother told my step dad that Henry “Hank” McCoy’s name was the Beast and well one revelation study too many drew my parent’s mind to the Beast the antichrist, not a super smart blue furry dude, he was obviously a satanic agent. So there was no way the fact that I was playing dnd was going to come out.
I am 40 years old and I have stood up in churches and talked about how that Satan uses this or that pop culture movement to ruin us. I have listened to this or that hair brained idea stretching conspiracy boo hockey be leveled on a whole room of people who then take that weird idea to the bank. It’s no wonder I posted no witchcraft signs on my door, and no surprise that it is still a struggle in my mind to not immediately see the “demonic influence” in so many harmless things.
I can build you a bridge from innocent TV show to of the devil quicker than a televangelist will take a widow’s pension.
