A random D/M question

I was wondering... for fans of D/M pairings, one of the most significant moments in the series is the joint D/M Quickening from Revelation 6:8. For me, that moment is a particularly striking creative choice on the part of the actual writers/director of the episode, simply because it is almost inexplicable, as part of a narrative, unless it was originally intended as a set up to an explicit D/M pairing or, at minimum, an explicit psychic bond. That is, it's hard to imagine that such a moment -- so fraught with sexual tension or at least symbolic of a deeper bond between D and M -- would have been generated without, well, intent.

So, I was wondering -- has anyone on the show itself ever weighed in on that, explained the thinking behind it?
