Lodgings

After Riza realized on the first night they would need lodgings for the immediate moment, she asked around about possible places, quite aware that neither of them were carrying a good amount of cash. The joys of the military; most of their needs were provided for already. She discovered that there were various hotels and motels which were willing to barter for other methods of payment in the event that someone arrived in the Nexus without sufficient funds.

The first one was looking for full time night office employee, but that wouldn't give her any time to sleep save for during the day when she had a superior officer to protect. The second one asked for something utterly unacceptable and inappropriate, and she left the office before losing her cool and shooting out the manager's kneecap.

Third time was the charm, and they were willing to work with a suitable schedule. In the early hours before Mustang would wake, she went down to the laundry room and prepared the housekeeping carts for the morning shift. In the late hours after he turned in, she reported in to the kitchen to wash dishes and clean the food prep areas.

That left her with only four hours of sleep a night. Not too bad, all things considered, and she had certainly done with less before. Surely they would find a way home before the sleep depreviation built up to an unmanageable level.

She had no intention of informing Mustang of what she was doing. It wasn't his concern. He had enough on his plate to worry about, and he told her to find a place for them to stay. That was her responsibility. It was her job to make the arrangements, and she merely assured him that the rooms were paid for.

But right now, over supper in the hotel's dining room, she was all too aware how long it would be before she could sleep, for too short a time. It took all her energy just to keep from yawning and maintain an appearance of being awake and alert.
