I have been in Scotland for over a week now, with just under a week to go. It's been wonderful, simply amazing. Chris and I have been driving around, stopping when we feel like it.
We started in Edinburgh, but quickly drove north to Pitlochry for the first night, followed by driving out to the Loch Tummel and a beautiful B&B for the night. Then the next day we drove west to Fort William and had our first whiskey distillary tour and getting lost around Loch Linnhe (by far my favorite loch so far). The following day we climbed Ben Nevis, the tallest peak in Scotland at 4400 feet (I know for you people out in the Rockies this doesnt seem high, but it was a rough climb) and then driving out to Glenelg for the night.
On day 4 we drove over to Isle of Skye via the Kyle of Lochalsh bridge and spent the day wandering Skye, seeing some cool geological formations called the Quirang and driving all the way to a lighthouse for the sunset. The second day in Skye was spent in the southern portion of the Isle, seeing a castle before driving back to he main land and heading further north to Ullapool. In Ullapool we got the first glimpse of snow capped mountains as well as our first hail before heading back south to Inverness.
So far of the cities, Inverness is probably my favorite, it was so pretty with gothic architecture with the river Ness flowing right through the middle. The next day we drove around the black isle north of the city, checked out a brewery and a winery (no real wine though since they can't grow grapes real well). Then east toward Aberdeen (which is the place I hated the most, all because of one person who made me feel really crappy).
Then we headed toward the heart of whiskey territory, Speyside and Dufftown, where there are 7 distilleries within one town. But we got distracted at Huntly where we found one of the Gordon castles since Chris is sort of part of the Gordon clan. We like the city so we stayed there for the night.
This morning we went to Elgin to see the ruined cathedral before heading to Urquhart Castle which is supposedly the best place to see the loch ness monster. (Un)surprisingly we did not see Nessie today so we decided to venture further south to Oban where we decided to stay the night before heading to edinburgh for our last 5 days.
Now for pictures!
