There are many factors for why the media and social views exist today.
1) Money makes the world go around. If everyone was happy with how they looked, would anyone sell makeup? How about diet plans? How about fitness programs? How about fashion magazines?
If people were happy the way they looked, they wouldn't read articles that say "100 Ways to Make You Look Better and Not Like the Slug I Just Ran Over".
2) We focus on the wrong thing. Sometimes people point out each other's flaws to make themselves feel better, or to reinforce an opinion of what is good or bad. Why do we need to focus on flaws? Why not focus on the super-awesome?
3) "Ordinary" people need to realize different availability. This is a bit dense, so everyone reading please bear with me. While fresh fruit and vegetables are available to everyone, don't you think that celebrities--whom everyone seems to idolize--will ALWAYS have it better than us "ordinary" folks?
3a) For one, they're photo-shopped. What was it, that Dove commercial that showed that girl getting everything on her face altered to become a model? Everyone has skin blemishes, unless one is rich enough to burn/cut/melt them off. Or they are on a magazine and edited off.
3b) For another, celebrities don't have to ever worry about how to get the best food. Celebrities can eat exotic fruits and vegetables freshly prepared at their table without lifting a finger if they so choose. They get the best nutrition because they can afford it. If by chance they ever get sick, they can afford the best doctors.
3c) Celebrities can look young forever with the plastic surgery they can afford. If most of them ever got attacked by a flesh-eating disease, a lot of their bodies would be inedible.
So there's the deal. If you want to compare yourself to Goddess McHotty and Manly McHunky, be my guest. If you want an honest opinion of how you look in a positive light, come find me.
