They covered it but looking by my google search, it looks as if Joan Jett did the original? Don't take my word on that.

I know I've heard a version that was recorded before Jimmy Eat World did. It might have been in a movie or something, I just noticed the chorus was the same; the verses might not have been.

Tommy Jones and the Shondells, and Jimmy Eat World didn't cover it, they 'sampled' a portion of the song in their song, "Praise Chorus" from the album "Bleed American"
