The shelling, the first in two years, started after dinner when the women were inside with Julianna and the newborn, Joseph. Anwar was out on the porch watching the neighbors play cards under the streetlamp. When the first shell whizzed overhead the cardplayers peered up at the sound, but then returned to their game. Joanna came out on the porch. "Mona says get inside. Get inside," she said. Mona was Anwar's mother. "Look," he pointed, "still playing cards. It's okay. They're shooting over the city into the sea, just to let everyone know their still up there." Joanna turned to go back inside. "You're all crazy," she said. Mona was in the living room, turning on the television. "I'll keep Juli in here," Mona said, "you take Joseph into a different room."
They kept the children in seperate rooms so that if a shell did hit the house at least one child would survive.
My girlfriend has had an amazing life thus far.
Anyhow, I'll be home in a few hours, I'm leaving for the airport in fifteen minutes. See you all soon.
