I am sure you are all sick of hearing about what's going on in Japan by now. Yes, Hawaii got hit by tsunami waves, and so did California. So did parts of Russia. I am sure even other nations have been affected.
But please remember I have friends in Japan. Most of them have been accounted for. Others have not. I plan to start spamming my Japanese communication channels asap in order to assure everyone I personally know and care for is alright.
It was easy to feel distanced from what was going on yesterday. It isn't as easy today. Some of my friends really had it rough. The death toll keeps climbing. It's upsetting, and yes I know it's a natural disaster so no one is to blame for this. I'm not looking for anyone to blame but I'm also not just going to shrug my shoulders and say "shit happens."
Though shit does indeed happen.
I am...in a way, proud that the US Navy is already helping and on its way to help. Even if some people are going "Ha! Suck on it Japan! Revenge for Pearl Harbor!" - and such people are ignorant ASSHOLES - and despite our complicated history, the US and Japan are close allies.
As I often like to say, when making jokes about countries, Japan is the USA's Asian BFF and it gets jealous when we try to make nice with Korea and China. (I think we in turn get jealous when they make nice with anyone in Europe. We don't mind them making nice with Canada because they tend to assume Canada is a part of the USA [that's one huge state hahaha!].)
I know I'm probably not conveying my emotions and thoughts very well.
Anyway, if any of you happen to hear of more fandom charity auctions (like the ones that have been held for Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Haiti, and the Gulf of Mexico) please let me know. Or of any way to help. Charities and donations are one thing and I am sure they will help but I can't give away everything I have.
I also can't fly over there and physically help.
I suppose in some odd way, this is a bit ironic as I just got accepted into grad school where I'll study to be a Japanese teacher and this...disaster happens in Japan on the same day.
