So today, with a group of second graders, I was reviewing words that fit the VCe pattern.
VCe = Vowel Consonant silent e (usually)
The words contained a long vowel sound, like bone, cone, globe, hose, mole, pole...and so on.
We practiced saying them, identifying the long vowel sound, and then practiced saying them without the e on the end. So cone became con, bone became bon, and so on.
And because I am me, and recovering from a cold, I said things like:
"Bon in French means good! But we want BONE so we need the e!"
"Mol sounds like mal which means bad in French, and we want a mole, so let's put on the e!"
"Hos sounds like haus which in German means house, but we want a hose not a house."
And one of the students exclaimed "HOW DO YOU KNOW ALL THAT?! HAVE YOU BEEN ALL OVER THE WORLD?!"
I never did answer the student, but yes, student, I have been all over the world. And there is so much more I want to see and learn and DO. In hindsight, I found the whole thing funny because I did it without thinking - translating the words into another language. It was probably more confusing than helpful but I did it with every word "We want a globe, not a GLOB!"
FYI Japan is apparently a freak of nature. It has forests in a latitude that is known to be ARID. So while everyone else in the world gets DESERT, Japan gets LUSH FOLIAGE. They also have huge ass water bugs. D8) DO NOT EVER WANT TO SEE. Do want to see the snow monkies though.
My host mother from Japan wrote to me!! I was so happy to read her letter. So much has changed...I should write her back asap...and the kimono people. Gah nearly been a year since I last talked to them. I suuuuck. OTL
