Substitute Teaching Day 2

Oct 19, 2010 19:24

I got called by three different schools this morning. One of which I have YET to visit and hand over my business card/profile sheet/resume. Which I guess means that the schools are reloading/updating their active subs database, which is a good thing!

So I went back to the school I was at for a half day yesterday. This time I had a full day of ESOL teaching, which for this elementary school, was more like being a teacher who went in and supported students who weren't as proficient as their peers with language arts and math.

Oh my god, kindergardeners are fricking adorable you guys. T^T

All the kids were awesome as were their teachers so I think it's the assignment/being more confident this day that made it way way better than yesterday.

Lunch was like $3.10! >/ Website says $2.10!! D< Why did I have to pay more?! Rawr. It was good though, and filling. American school lunch, you put Japanese school lunch to shame!

Best quotes from kids today:

~in 4th grade~
student1: what happened to your face?
me:...huh?
student2: it's all red!
student1: yeah, there's a big red line!
me: really? where?
student2: they look like bug bites!
student1: are they bug bites?
me: *OH NO THEY SPOTTED MY HUGE PERIOD-INDUCED ACNE. GDI HORMONES, HURRY UP AND TURN 50 YEARS OLD* OH. YES. These are bug bites! I gotta be careful to not scratch them because they're itchy!
student1: Yeah, I hate how itchy they get!

student3: Will you be here tomorrow?
me: I don't know. If a teacher can't come, I'll come okay?

Seriously. I got a lot of "will you come back later?" "will you stay all day?" "will you come back tomorrow?"

I know being a teacher is hard. It's tiring and some days you don't get to sit down or think or plan or even eat lunch.

But it's totally worth it to hear the kids ask for you to come back and be their teacher. It makes me cry because it is so cute, so pure, so innocent, and well intentioned.

I had a lot of fun today and though this elementary school isn't the closest one to my house, I think I've got a hang of how they work.

Now to master the getting to bed by like 10:30 trick. Or 11:00. I don't even know you guys. OTL

Layne: I have no idea if I am going to get called in tomorrow. I know I got plans to meet with you and I want to, but this job = $$ I need for bills/to pay back mom/help mom support the three of us. We might have to aim for weekends...which sucks but that's the nature of this job. I can't predict when I will work or not, but by 7:30AM I will probably know for sure. So I will keep you posted on tomorrow okay? I'm really sorry about this...

good day, work, america, layne
