New Backstory for Deuce

Medusa's world is a lot like the world that we live in today. People go about their daily lives with much of a care except for what they're doing and a lot of things go unnoticed. Sadly, Deuce gets noticed too much for her own liking. There are a few things in her world that are different. No one really knows how it happened or why, but people were being born part animal. It's taken many generations, but the demihumans are finally being accepted into normal society. There is still a lot of racial tension between them and normal humans, but things are getting a bit better.

Medusa Preston started her life in North Texas. She was the youngest of four children to a family that was part snake. She would have been considered the black sheep of the family, since unlike her older siblings and parents, she didn't have any scales. She had the eyes, tongue, and fangs of a snake, but nothing else. Her parents were pretty much covered in them while her siblings had them covering about half their bodies. The only thing that kept her from being the black sheep of the family was her grades in school. Medusa was smart and got the best grades out of all of her siblings.

After graduating high school, Medusa learned about how her kind of demihumans usually made money. Since snakes had an easier time sneaking into places and staying hidden, they often did work as assassins and spies for the government or whoever would pay high enough. They were able to keep out of sight and track their target for longer than any other species of demihuman. They didn't have to eat very often and they could keep still for far longer than any other species. They just couldn't handle the cold very well. Snakes usually hibernated during the winter time, making them fairly useless in extreme cold.

Of course, Deuce grew up knowing that her parents had once been a part of the military and that they had gotten married after their time had been served. She learned a lot the year she graduated. She never knew anything about the missions that her parents had gone on. Deuce wasn't sure what her siblings would do with the information, but she knew that she would do what her parents did and join the military. Her family was surprised to find out that the youngest daughter, who was a bit of a nerd, would do something like this.

The training was hard and kept her away from her family, but Deuce was able to finish it and continue her education. During her time spent in the military, she was sent overseas to various countries while she worked towards a degree in computer science. Her education was more of a cover than anything, since her superiors had seen the same skills in her that they had seen in her parents.

Deuce never talked about what she did while she was gone, most of it was top secret and none of her friends really wanted to know about how she went to another country to study something that she could have studied in the U.S.A. During some leave, Deuce moved in with a friend she had made, Mika Whitepaws. The two of them lived in Southern California where despite her best efforts, Deuce's nerdy side began to show.

Deuce never did ask Mika what happened when she vanished, but she did what she could to help keep her friend together, even if it meant staying up all night and binging on chocolate ice cream. It was for a friend. She'd do whatever she could for the ones she considered her friends, since she was far away from her family.

That still didn't stop a group of assassins from coming to the apartment and trying to kill her. The bad thing...she wasn't home. Mika was. The assassins left her a message, three bullet wounds in her best friend. Deuce wasn't even sure why they had even gone after her. Sure, she had been on a lot of classified missions, but nothing that would have warranted something like this.

Deuce did what she could to care for Mika while she tried to find out who would want to do this to someone who was serving their country. Deuce was still working on trying to figure out who had attacked her friend and home several weeks later. That's when she woke up in a bed that wasn't her own.
