Yes, Malouda should have gotten the penalty for the second one, but who's to say the game would have worked out like it did if he hadn't gotten the first? Anyways, I agree that Italy was outplayed by far in the second half, it was quite painful to watch. What was Barthez doing in goal anyway? he looked really shaky between the pipes every time I saw him, even on his saves. ><

I expected much better out of Buffon, too. Gah. In truth, France probably should have won, but I'm still glad that my Italia did. WEWT

I haven't watched soccer much so maybe I don't understand the finer points or whatever... but there are several things with soccer that bother me. One is the fact that there's no real good system against diving. There's no video replay so it's almost like players are encouraged to encorporate diving into their skill set. I'm not saying that it's a good thing for the game... but there's no effective way to consistently identify diving. I know baseball also had this huge thing with umpires and strike zones... in that case I can sorta see that if there was a camera or some automated computer system that called it, it's only a matter of time before the umpires will be out of jobs. But that's not the case in soccer. You can have it more like American football. The refs are still there to make the calls... but give the coaches a chance to maybe dispute the call. But I don't know enough about soccer to tell if that'd be against the spirit of the game or whatever.
