i'm in italy, bitch

the title says it all. yesterday was pompeii (everyone knows what that is, and if you don't you're uncultured american swine, ill-versed in history) and today was paestum (an interesting amalgam of greek, native and roman influences; pompeii was also but pompeii was much more segregated in terms of influences and was also more heavily roman than anything else by the end, while paestum has 3 amazing examples of greek temple construction. i believe the largest of the three may be the largest existing temple, which is interesting because this is in fact italy and not greece).

had a bit of an adventure with chris and hannah as we managed to get lost in paestum (we blame this all on chris) and then be on the wrong platform for the train and possibly have missed the next one (we're not quite sure if we missed a train or it just didn't come) but we finally managed to get on the last train out that night (it was 5:43) with the help of a bostonian who happened to be in italy teaching english and saw us arguing on the other side of the train platform. the main problem was that we didn't know what was going on in the station because we didn't really understand the train system, and also nobody was around that we couldve asked (or mimed, since none of us are actually able to speak italian) what the hell was going on. by the time the train came, though, it was dark and cold and we were very glad to be on the train. since we all got back in one piece (the professors didn't notice we were gone, one was sleeping and i'm not sure where the other was) and it didn't cost anything, it will become an interesting anecdote for the ages.

more on italia as events develop

oh, and the reason we were separated from prof scholten, who was with us for a while when the rest of the group left, was because chris (who apparently has a love of knick-knacks) and hannah insisted on buying copper phalluses. that is all for now.
