Last-minute?
Ken's app was so super last minute it isn't even funny. Renet had been prodding me to app him for months, but I was scared, and fiiiinally I was like, "apps are today? ALRIGHT!" and I wrote one just about when the window opened, and sent it in then.
Terry's was similarly last minute. I wanted to app again, but I'd just failed with Pell twice and wasn't ready for another try. Work was slow, I was on gmail chat with Francescu, and I said, "...I'm apping again. Wish me luck." Sent it in right at the window, BEFORE sending Carrot's Andrew app, and proceeded to sob and think I sucked and I'd been weeded when she was in the second round and I didn't go up for another two.
Turnbull was someone I decided to app when Wolfram and I were squeeing about our mutual dS obsession and she said, "I'm double apping Fraser with a Ray, we need the rest of the dS cast!" And I was like, "uhm. I could write a Turnbull. I could totally do Turnbull." I didn't actually write the app, however, until the morning apps opened. I finished it about an hour before the window.
Pell's first app was impulse and terrible and written on the heels of a major research paper. His second app was just a revision of the first, and for some reason betaing didn't work out. His third app was the only one I wrote ahead of time, and had beta-ed, and it went through a few versions. I was happy with it until I got my non-canon beta back the morning apps opened, and she didn't like it, and I flailed and panicked and cried on Cal and then... rewrote the whole fucking thing right before the window. Again. :D
Kurt was an impulse app... a RL friend had been wanting to get into camp, and said she was apping from Evo. I said I'd app with her, for moral support, and when she bailed out I realized that I actually did want to play Kurt, and still wanted to go through with things I'd planned to do with him if I got in. So I apped anyway, even though I only finished writing it the night before.
I think it's safe to say I'm a last minute apper. But I know who I'm apping ahead of time.
(I was actually debating between Ken and Terry as my first app, but went with Ken because of Omi. If you check the date on Terry's journal, I snagged it when I got in with Ken, because I liked the name.)

I think if I'd been voting on Ken's, the in would have been for voice... it's not particularly funny, but he's a hard character to app, so I cut myself some slack. I also think Terry's could have been a little more creative, but it was really hard to write because he's so physical, and for some reason I wanted to app a fight scene when you can't do *actions!* in apps. Smaaaart, Ana.
Turnbull's was the one I had the most fun writing. It flowed the easiest, I wasn't too stressed because I figured, "counselor apps, I'm getting weeded anyway," and he came pre-crackified for me. Still in the cling-wrap! He was consequentially the one I panicked the most over because he DID go up to vote, and he went up before his canonmates as the show side-character. I think Wolfram and I died on each other in irc. I sometimes have no idea how I write him, though, because he and I could not be much more different. I'll write a Turnbull comment and go, "where did that come from. I wrote that bullshit. o_O"
Kurt's was a lot of fun to write, and the one that I worried the most about, due to accent issues. I had no idea how to use it in the app, and while I had some good jokes and thought I had the voice down, but knew that I'd get a lot of out votes because of the accent thing, and the fact that I didn't know how to handle it. I essayed in the app post, but knew that it wasn't enough. He's incredible fun now that it's in, though.
But Pell's is my favorite. The third one, that is. I took a break between apps, re-read the canon, essayed (which is now posted on Pell's journal), wrote some fic to get into his voice, and... came up with a much better angle. It's hard to write him talking to someone because he plays off everyone he meets, but if he's writing things down, he can be himself. It got across his voice and mannerisms in a way straight dialogue couldn't have. Aside from all that, Pell was hands down the hardest character I've apped so far, but he's my personal breed of funny. Sort of understated and subtle, not a laugh-out-loud funny as much as a, "heeeee, yeah alright you're cute." Now that I'm not panicking, I can read it and see that it's my favorite.
From there, he's also my favorite to play. He's always surprising me and just being Pell and I was so worried about him and I still worry about him, but he's. He's charming and gentle and he gets what he wants and wins people over and I COULD NEVER DO ANY OF THAT. Also, do you have any idea how nice it is to have an eloquent character, after Ken and Terry for so long? Lemme tell ya. XD Pell is also the one with the crackiest canon. Uterus party. WTF so much fun.
Character Choice
...I'll write this later. o_O
