...so LJ ate my fucking comment. Which was an ESSAY. After wailing about it in the chan, I shall now REWRITE WITH COHERENCE. In Notepad. Fuck u lj. ♥

Anyway. Let's essay at each other. It'll be hot. Hurhur.

I would also love to essay on the way Carrot is with people in CFUD, in contrast to Ankh-Morpork. But to sum up: in Ankh-Morpork, Carrot never had to make friends, because everyone automatically liked him, even if they didn't want to. In CFUD, that's not the case. TADA.

Anyway.

Canonically, Carrot doesn't have close friends, save for Angua, and Vimes at a stretch, that that one there is riddled with professionalism. So that leaves me, over here, PANICKING, because suddenly Carrot is in fact making close friends and that has to be OOC! But upon thought, it's not. And I'll essay on that in my own LJ.

For now, I'll say that Ken would qualify as a close friend, or at least, getting to be a close friend. Ken was initially very nice to Carrot, more so because he offered him a place to stay, and then proceeded to try and stop getting Carrot killed by people, yayz. And then they hung out and there was soccer and Carrot discovers that making friends is different to just being nice to everyone. And hey, for me anyway, it's developing. Canonically, Carrot doesn't really confide in anyone or confront them, the closest he's ever gotten to that is with Angua, and then even that is later in his canon from when I take him from.

With Ken, I think he'll quite soon be able to confide in him and not have to put up a 'I'm fine, nice weather we're having, what ho good citizen' front with him. Of course, the majority of the time, that's not a front, Carrot is actually like that, but he doesn't really just talk openly to anyone. I think he could with Ken, however, and on the opposite of that, he can confront Ken as well, re: notjustagoddamnflorist. Usually, he doesn't mind if people want to keep things secret, because it's their business, but for some reason, it bothered him a little that Ken wasn't telling him something he knew was significent. Because, hey, friends!

God, what else did I say? I think that's about it. I rule.

U-unf, essay! ♥

Like somebody up there mentioned, 'nice' is more or less Ken's default setting. He's a good judge of character about 90% of the time, and Carrot was clearly an honorable guy... with absolutely no clue of how to deal with people, and to some extent the customs of this world. Ken wasn't going to leave him alone to get shot, when he was just being himself... it would have been sort of cute if he hadn't been facepalming so much. So yes. Carrot is dense but well-intentioned, and that's the important part, to Ken.

The only thing that really bothers him about Carrot is his obsession with the Law. Laws, in general, are good things to have, but Ken doesn't think Carrot understands that they're usually twisted and abused, and doing the right thing doesn't always mean following the Law. Or leaders. Leaders are corrupt. They probably shouldn't have any political discussions anytime soon.

The confrontation was an interesting scene. Made more interesting now that I know he doesn't confide or confront people.. but here's it from Ken's point of view. Not many people have confronted him about the assassin thing. There was Rikuou, who doesn't actually give a fuck, but made Ken incredibly nervous. There was Clark, who Ken considered a close friend beforehand, and who trusted him enough to back down when Ken said he couldn't explain. But in that situation, there was also the fact Ken has sort of caught on about Clark's not-human-ness. They each have something on the other. Then there's Carrot. Ken has nothing on Carrot. Carrot's not taking his, "I can't tell you," for an answer, but he's also not making Ken uncomfortable about it. Which makes Ken want to tell him. His main hesitations are due to Omi getting upset, and secondarily Carrot not understanding. Without prompting or outside influence, Ken's only actually told Swift, Francescu, and Wolfram he was an assassin. And he knew for a fact that all of them would understand. Swift's father was a warlord. Francescu knows about evil in the world. Wolfram is trained for war. They're also three of his closest friends at camp. Carrot, in Ken's eyes, might understand the concept of evil people, but wouldn't agree with him about the assassination bit, possibly to the point where he'd lose a friend over it. Which he doesn't want to happen. So... he doesn't know what to do. He'll need more reassurance that Carrot isn't going to hate him before he just blurts it out, honestly.

(If you want to know what really won Ken over? It was the zombie soccer team. After he got over the intial OMGWTFZOMBIES, he realized Carrot did it for him, and that was sort of a warm fuzzy feeling. There are very few people in camp who would go through that sort of trouble for Ken. There are people closer to him who wouldn't have gone through that sort of trouble. It meant a lot.)

In short, we both need to get off hiatus and be on at the same time so that they can talk. Ken will need people to distract him when he gets back, from the fact that Omi isn't back yet.
