Stanley Kubrick - love him or hate him, there is no middle ground on that man's movies. 2001 falls into the "boring" category for me. If you're going to spend any of your time experiencing his work, go for "Clockwork Orange".

You'll only watch it once...and I won't watch it with you - but if you want to see an influential Kubrick film, that would be the one.

I don't know that it's possible to stay awake through "Space Odessey". I do know that it's *not* possible to fall asleep during Clockwork Orange.
