Great episode, Kripke. Don't get me wrong. Great plot hooks, good pacing, excellent plot twists, and you actually kept to the brother-angst-resolution cookie you gave us last episode. I had fun. I did. Good job.
However...
...I find myself rather justifiably perturbed.
But I can't complain too much, sadly. I can't complain too much, because after this episode...and a few other plot points my mother tipped me off to...I think I might have just made fannish history.
I have been officially Kripke'd and Joss'd at the same damn time.
Those of you who know me in real life or who frequent my fanfiction.net account might be familiar with one of my larger stories - "Angels High, Demons Wild" - one of approximately six stories in the Good Omens/Supernatural crossover section and the only one over three thousand words. I did my research on this sucker. I pretty much re-read Good Omens to get Crowley and Aziraphale's characterization down, and this story is basically the reason I started watching this show in the first place. I listened to Mom talking about it for several months, caught snatches of Season 4 in during water breaks during study runs, and finally the plot bunny snuck up behind me and sat on me. Several months later I have a seventy-seven page monstrosity that (fairly seamlessly, if I do say so myself) incorporates Adam, Crowley, Aziraphale, Newt, and Anathema with Sam, Dean, Castiel, and Uriel.
So I watch this episode, and I've already seen from the previews that their going the chibi-Antichrist route. I'm a bit peeved at this point...writing a sequel's going to be harder with two Antichrists to deal with...but I have faith in my writing skills. I kept thinking I could manage it.
And then I actually watched the episode.
I've made a list.
Unconsciously manipulates reality to his will? Check.
Young for his age, but incredibly mature despite that? Check.
Practically unseen parents? Check.
Believes everything he hears? Check.
Something slightly unnatural about him even before the big reveal? Check.
A near complete invulnerability to harm? Sought after by Lucifer to help end the world? Stronger than anything in Heavne or Hell? Eventually decides to remove himself from the battle entirely for the sake of preserving his home and the people he loves?
Check, check, check, and...wait for it...check.
Jeez, Kripke. Why not go the extra mile and give him a little yappy dog?
And then, a few weeks ago, my mother tipped me off to this.
http://spoilertv.blogspot.com/2009/10/supernatural-episode-510-abandon-all.html Not exactly the same. Not exactly.
Just...enough. Bring in an angel who runs a bookshop, and we'll have the whole gang.
So you know what, Kripke? Good episode, quality television, brother dynamic I have been missing since Season 2. Hell, you just might have even freed up a massive chunk of my writing time.
Even so.
Fuck you.
I'm sure I could still write a sequel, if the plot bunny ever came back and sat on me again. But then I'd have to deal with Jesse and other!Crowley and how they're both Lucifer's attempt to get it right this time and blatant imposters, respectively. It might be fun. I don't know. I never thought "Angels High, Demons Wild" would be as fun, satisfying, and good as it wound up being. But...but...stop stealing my thunder, you shmuck! I really hope Neil Gaiman doesn't watch this show, or he just might have to sue you by Episode 10!
To make a long story short, Kripke. Joss owns my soul, but you've certainly upped the ante for the bid. As long as you keep the brother dynamic, you'll probably keep me.
Regardless. See earlier point.
Fuck.
You.
