Today was my first day at T_____ College. . .
I woke up this morning and still wanted to go to school! This is big. :-) See, usually what happens is I wake up the morning of a large event and begrudgingly go, because the idea of changing my normal routine is not appealing. Creature of habit! But not today! I changed my routine gracefully. *bow*
I arrived at school early so I could get acclimated, pick up my last book in the supposedly zoo-like bookstore, and not have to rush at all. When I arrived at the bookstore with my receipt proving I’d prepaid for the book and only had to pick it up, I discovered that hardly anyone was even in the bookstore! So much for it being ‘packed’ and ‘crazy’ the first morning of school! :-) I handed the front desk lady my receipt and she dispatched a confused looking man to find my book. This man is worth describing: short, bleached blonde sticking-up hair and a goatee that couldn’t decide of it wanted to be bleached or dark brown. The confusion of his goatee was reflected in his behavior :-) I could have found the book in 5 seconds. . . it took him 5 minutes. Then, there was the confusion of getting me an original receipt. The whole ordeal took far longer than simply buying the book would have! Since I’d arrived early, this thought didn’t bother me, it only plastered a smirk on my face.
During the whole bookstore adventure, my backpack began giving me trouble. I had packed every book for all three of my classes, just in case I needed them, and the backpack weighed a ton. So, between the backpack pulling me backwards and my flip-flops sliding off every few minutes I had a time of getting into the South Hall. Once in, I looked around bewildered. I had to eventually ask for help finding my first classroom. Once I was there, with plenty of time to spare, I spied a couch. Yes! A couch on which I could rest my flip-flopped feet and tired back. Two girls were deep in conversation-one seemed to be the type that thought doing poorly in school was cool, the other was the opposite. I talked a little with both up until it was time for class and discovered that the latter was in my Criminal Justice class. It was comforting to go into my first class knowing someone. . . though we never actually exchanged names. :-)
All three classes mainly focused on the basics of the class: going through the syllabus and discussing expectations, tests, grading, assignments, books, and all the beginning stuff. My Criminal Justice teacher, Mr. Becker, went a little farther. He talked about how Criminal Justice touches every area of life. He asked us a lot of questions and wanted to hear our opinions. That was cool; though it’s been a long time since I’ve been in a classroom!
My English class was neat too; the teacher, Mr. Boyd, was very laid back and even funny. I know I’m going to like that class-it’ll make me write and I’ll actually get critiques from someone who is completely unbiased. The assignment for our first essay is to 'classify' a previously unchatagorized subject. We were encouraged to be creative, even humorous on this first paper since it is to give him a sample of our work. I'm thinking I might try chategorizing book and film villains. . .
After the class I met another student, Alex, on the grounds that he thought I had a sister that he had recently met. :-) He was nice and friendly, though. I tell you, there must be a lot of people walking around with my face. The number of times I’ve been told I look like someone else is unsettling. :-)
My history teacher, Dr. Hayward, is my favorite so far, probably because she reminds me so much of my best friend's mom. Honestly! She had the same coloring, voice, and mannerisms paired with a floaty skirt (her mom is known for her 'floaty skirts'). She is a neat lady, and I’m looking forward to learning from her. On the way into the class, a girl named Caitlin introduced herself. She was really sweet, and said she’s still in high school taking the class for dual credit. Wow. I love meeting my classmates. Though, some of them look like they’d rather be at the bottom of the ocean than in class. ;-)
So, that was my day!
