East Asians love their carbs. Rice is the main source of carbohydrates, and many Japanese people eat it for breakfast as well as lunch and dinner (though I'm sure a lot will add variety by having noodles, okonomiyaki, or "foreign" food every now and then). School lunches always came with a bowl of rice unless it was "bread day." Then we would have a large piece of bread and a bowl of noodles. Students and co-workers would ask me if I preferred ごはん ("gohan", rice) or パン ("pan", bread). I could never figure out if they meant for breakfast, for lunch/dinner, or overall. For them, the answer probably isn't conditional. How about you?
Do you prefer rice or bread? Does it depend on the meal?
My students and co-workers figured that I'd like bread more because they think of rice as a very Japanese dish. As I implied earlier, it depends on the meal for me. Overall, I like rice more, but I prefer eating bread for breakfast. I don't mind rice for breakfast, but it doesn't make me feel like I've eaten something substantial for me to last the whole morning. It's like bread during lunch or dinner is an appetizer in my mind; I have to eat more than that. Maybe a better comparison is having lunch without bread, rice, noodles, or some sort of carbohydrate (a bun counts). It doesn't feel like I've finished the meal-- unless it's a giant steak and I have veggies on the side, but I still feel like I'm missing something even if I'm full. This is probably why I haven't gotten any skinnier even if I've been trying to cut out fatty foods and exercising more. I love carbs too much.
