raising kids

Before anyone gets excited, we're NOT having kids!

Trying to be green and self sustaining, T and I have wanted to have chooks in the garden for ages. We feed them scraps and pellets and they give us great organic eggs and rich fertiliser. Even more than that its nice to have pets to look after and play with. After a little deliberation and talking to pet shop owners about chooks we stumbled onto a some Japanese quails, semi-flightless birds that are about a quarter the size of chooks. Apperently they only fly straight up and down and not sideways. They lay eggs from time to time and you can eat them just like chook eggs. Well thats what I'm told because I have no idea how big the eggs will be or if they'll be any tastey. From memory mum used to buy them for us as kids and they used to be a little smaller than a 20c piece.

We picked up 3 chicks from the store today with a bag of feed. One white male bird and two earthy coloured females. This is apperently the right combination to keep them. I roughly whipped a large cardboard box with a chicken wire grill on the side so we can check them out. they are so cute! Hope it all goes well.
