“Hales let’s go,” Nathan called from the apartment door. He already had a cooler and two towels slung over his shoulder.
“Alright let’s go,” she came from their bedroom with a bag slung over her shoulder. Their jeep already had two surfboards on top and a stack of chairs in the back Haley’s parents had sent them a rather sizable check for graduation, and with a little bit of Dan’s generosity, they were able to purchase the Wrangler as new, “we have like half an hour.”
“I know but I thought I might be able to convince you to go for a swim, before the triangle arrives and we’re forced to divide,” he replied steering the jeep to the drive on ramp.
“Unfortunately you have a point,” she replied.
“C’mon, c’mon,” he mumbled anxiously standing in front of the car bouncing as she slowly peeled off her shorts, “yes let’s go.”
“Okay, but you have to let me put some sunscreen on you when everyone else gets here,” she warned as he grew impatient and threw her over his shoulder, “you better think twice about dropping me in there,” she warned.
Smart enough to heed her warning he slung her back over his shoulder and into his arms before placing her onto her feet at the water’s edge, “I was just getting you down here quicker.”
“You aren’t that innocent,” she laughed running for the water before he could grab her. He gave chase for a while but turned to pout giving up, “oh poor baby,” she grabbed onto his shoulders, wrapping her legs around his waist, she pulled his pouting lower lip between her teeth, grinning into his mouth when his arms unfolded and his hands grabbed her hips. She thought he was going to join, but knew she was wrong when she was flying through the air moments later.
He laughed until he noticed he couldn’t see her any more glancing around again trying to see her, he sighed noticing her making her way toward shore. Deciding he should follow and apologize he made his way to shore as well. He groaned when he saw the fellow brunette who would now undoubtedly be taking his wife’s attention.
“Sorry,” he stepped up behind her at the back of their jeep, taking the sunscreen from the bumper to apply to her back.
“It’s okay,” she replied, “we were just playing around; I just headed up to the beach because I saw Brooke.”
“Okay,” he nodded.
Over two hours later Brooke and Haley were tanning, while Nathan, Lucas, and a newly returned Jake through a football around the surf and Peyton was drawing Jenny, while she built a sandcastle.
“Well I knew you weren’t talking to Brooke, but I didn’t realize you and Haley aren’t talking,” Jake sighed as they carried the football to the jeep and grabbing one of Nathan’s surfboards.
“Just not when Brooke is around,” Lucas sighed, “we both agreed it would keep Brooke calm. ‘Cause trust me the last thing you want is an unhappy Brooke.”
“Don’t I know it,” Nathan added in an annoyed voice. When Brooke had moved out of the Sawyer household she’d temporarily taken refuge on their couch until Haley forced them to reunite, so they could have their newlywed time.
“Okay I’m done with all this crap,” Haley finally sighed, “Peyton,” she yelled down the beach. She waved her over and when she finally arrived with Jenny perched on her hip she looked at everyone gathered around. “Nathan and I are tired of being in between this whole little love triangle you’ve got going on, or not going on or whatever. This is the last day that we’ll all be together for probably close to a year so can we all please just enjoy it together?”
“I’m willing,” Peyton sighed having given up on the fight a while ago, she was in love with Jake and they would both be headed back to Savannah tomorrow for Jake to finish up the last bit of classes he need for his diploma and for Peyton to attend the School of the Arts.
“I guess,” Brooke sighed.
“I’m in,” Lucas agreed.
“Alright,” Haley sighed, “now who wants lunch?”
“Me hungy,” Jenny understood the word lunch, and added her two cents.
“Of course you are,” Jake laughed, taking his daughter turning to his own truck where he had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for her.
“Food’s in the cooler, enjoy,” Nathan told the group pulling Haley away from the rest and down the beach.
“Nathan, why’d you do that?” Haley asked once they’d walked a considerable distance.
“Because I want to spend time with you,” he stopped them wrapping his arms tightly around her, “that was a good thing you did.”
“They need to get over it, I know he’s not meant to be with either of them, I mean not everybody finds their one true love in high school,” she grinned, leaning up for a kiss.
“Umm, I’m glad I’m not everybody,” he replied when she pulled back. He pushed Haley back into a cove in the dunes dragging her down to the sand with him.
“Nathan, we can’t,” Haley sighed when she felt his fingers on the ties to the bottom of her bikini.
“Oh but we can,” he replied continuing on his mission.
“Nath-ohh,” she sighed when his fingers found a magic spot.
“So where’d you two go?” Brooke asked when they strolled up to the group almost an hour later.
“Oh you know, took a swim, had married time,” Nathan grinned pulling out the container of egg salad and a fork.
“Oh you two had beach sex,” Peyton announced, Haley nearly choked on the bite Nathan had fed her.
“Peyton,” Jake scolded nodding to Jenny.
“Oh sorry ignore Peyton okay?” she smoothed a hand over her blonde curls. “So how was it?”
“Peyton!!” Lucas exclaimed covering his ears and closing his eyes when Nathan smirked and Haley hid her blushing face in his back.
“That good?” Peyton nodded, “good for you.”
“Yeah Hales, you need to relax about the whole sex thing,” Brooke said just as Lucas dropped his hands.
“Brooke!” he exclaimed this time causing the entire group to laugh even Haley, who was normally more reserved about the whole sex thing.
“Get over it Broody,” Brooke hooked an arm through Haley’s dragging her back over their beach towels leaving the boys watching after them.
“Jenny, you ready to go finish that castle?” Peyton asked grabbing the little girl’s hat to shade her face from the sun.
“Yeah,” she exclaimed grabbing Peyton’s hand following her down to their previously built mound.
“This was a good idea Hales,” Lucas sighed that night as they sat around a fire they’d built. They’d cooked hotdogs over the fire earlier and were enjoying the quite as they each watched the flames in front of them.
Brooke and Lucas were sitting next to each other amazingly, and Haley and Peyton were leaned back against Nathan and Jake respectively. Jenny was sleeping in Peyton’s lap and the silence was finally peaceful within the group for the first time in over three months.
“I have one more surprise for you guys,” she jumped up going around to the back of the jeep opening the storage compartment in the floor of the jeep. She grabbed a few things before moving back between Nathan’s legs.
She handed everybody their straightened hangers from earlier before tossing a bag of marshmallows to Lucas, one to Jake and opening the third one for herself. “S’mores, Hales you’re a genius.”
“Duh, she was valedictorian,” Nathan reminded the group, handing the stack of chocolate bars to Brooke after taking two for him and Haley.
“And thanks for that embarrassing reminder,” Haley gave a firm pat to Nathan’s leg sticking marshmallows on to a wire hanger for herself and Nathan.
“I’m proud of you,” he murmured in her ear, placing a kiss on it, they continued murmuring back and forth causing Haley to lose her concentration on the marshmallows and when she finally pulled the hanger from the fire.
“Nice work you two,” Brooke laughed as Haley reloaded the hanger.
The friends continued laughing a joking into the night finally heading home just as the sun was coming up. Even though most were headed in different directions they knew they’d always have the others around the fire and that was a feeling they would all hold on to for a good time to come.
