Stuff that sneaks up on you when you're not looking
At some point this weekend I finished my reading to the moon project. I can't tell you which book put me over - I'm just now entering them on my list and the order has got a bit jumbled. It might not have even been this weekend, as there were a few books I read last week in the pile too. But my goal had been to read 238,857 pages (or one page per mile), and the current total is 239,962, so I've overshot by more than a thousand pages. Somewhere along the line I stopped posting titles, and there are more than fifty since my last update, so I don't think I'll even try, but here are some of the books that stood out for me:
A Brief History of Montmaray and The FitzOsbornes in Exile by Michelle Cooper. Teen historical fiction. The quirky royal family of the tiny island of Montmaray coping on the eve of World War II. This captures the feel of pre-War British fiction very well, with some surprises along the way.
Tuesdays in the Castle by Jessica Day George. Middle grade fantasy. Celie is the youngest of a royal family who lives in a castle with a mind of its own in which new rooms often appear on Tuesdays. When her parents and older brother are ambushed, she and her siblings have to figure out how to save the day. I thought this was going to be light and fluffy, but it had unexpected depths.
And a few (mostly fantasy) authors who I've mentioned before, who are doing interesting things and have or are about to have new books out:
Cinda Williams Chima
Alison Goodman
Michael Scott
James A. Owen
Violet Haberdasher (and alternate world which is not fantasy)
I also ended up reading the first four of A Song of Ice and Fire, though I keep getting distracted from the fifth, reread John Tunis' Brooklyn Dodgers series (still my favorite baseball stories ever), read an assortment of vintage series novels (Maida, Cherry Ames, Betty Wales, and Peggy the actress whose last name I can't remember), and started rereads of Louise Cooper's Time Master series and Lyda Morehouse's Archangel Protocol series.
I think from here on out, I'm going to abandon counting pages and just try to post once a month with what I've been reading.
I know it's been ages since I've written a proper post. Look at the entry before this one and you'll see part of the reason why. The other part is that we moved the library back from temporary quarters, we're still short staffed, and I've been scattered all summer because of it.
I've got a few posts in the works - about the library, about my sewing projects, and just a general catch-up post but this will have to do for now.
