Yeah, I read the 'astronauts' thing as a snarky ref to USLOM - but you're right, the S&S mention was odd. It was thrown out there, and he lingered over it like he was going to chuck out the typical Gene Genie metaphor like he did when he ref'ed the Professionals (I'm the SAS bloke, you're the one with the girly perm) - but all we get was 'I'm him, and you're...her'? Odd.
I have visions of them ending it with the chequerboard-ceilinged office floating in space, surrounded by stars, with...just Gene, alone? Or with the Bowieflashed members of the team who've chosen to stay? I would be kind of fine with that. :D
I really hope it doesn't end like that. But I got that flash of fear with the stars. Maybe they're purposefully misleading us and using the US version just as a pre-made diversion (while mocking it at the same time).
The Sapphire and Steel reference though, it just made me happy ('cause well, SAPPHIRE & STEEL), but you're interpretation does sound disappointingly valid (I will consider that ending such a cop out for this show).
