Severus Snape sat in his office, grading papers. Perhaps grading wasn't the best term for it, however, since he simply had to look at them to know that they were all rubbish. Another T was marked on another parchment when he heard the noise. It was a loud, howling sound coming from just outside his door.
The T was ruined by the scratching of his quill when he looked up. He wouldn't give anyone the satisfaction of knowing that he'd been startled, but he had been.
His lips pursed as he glared at the door, saying in a low tone, "Show yourself!"
Nothing appeared and there was only silence. He waited a moment, not moving a muscle. He had perfected the art of patience in his many years, and there was nothing that could beat him in terms of simply waiting. After that moment was up, he looked back down at the paper, finishing the T and moving it to the stack of abysmal papers that he'd already graded.
Another howl sounded.
Coming to his feet in a smooth motion, he headed for the door, yanking it open with the grace that only he, the Potions Master, truly had. It slammed into the wall, and his eyes swept across the hall -- where there was nothing to be found. His brows furrowed, and the scowl on his face was deeply etched.
He wouldn't give the culprit the chance to see him calling out to seemingly nothing, so he didn't speak again. Instead, he simply swirled around, his robes billowing about him as he headed for his desk once more. He would ignore the howls, and they would go away.
When the third, the fourth, the fifth one came at his door, he couldn't take it anymore. Standing and slamming his palms down onto the desktop wood, he bellowed, "Fifty points from-- Gryffindor!" As, obviously, no one would have been ballsy enough to play this kind of prank. No one but a Gryffindor.
If only he'd known...
Poor Mrs. Norris was stuck under the cabinet by his door.
