It was 1994, and Hogwarts and all of the students in it were preparing for the Yule Ball. The Weird Sisters were setting up there stage, the young wizards were clowning around and acting like they didn’t care how they looked, and the young witches were quite busy getting ready for their first dance.

Draco glanced over at the other boys in his dorm who were getting ready. He laughed to himself, because he knew that no matter how much they tried to not show it each one of them were spending hours staring at themselves in the mirror to impress the girls they somehow managed to scrap up as dates. Meanwhile, he was sitting on his bed trying to be as invisible as possible. There was really no reason he wanted to be at the ball. It’s not like he gave a shit about his date, and the Weird Sisters are just lame. Finally it was time to head to the common room to meet Pansy Parkinson, who he asked for the simple reason that he didn’t want her to go creeper stalker on him. That shit was weird.

Hermione glanced around her dorm room. The other girls on an everyday basis were so much prettier than her. She was such an idiot for thinking it would be any different tonight. If it weren’t for Viktor, she probably wouldn’t even bother. He invited her of all people, after all. She couldn’t just stand him up, and even if she did, where would she go? Girls bathroom? Last time she did that there was a troll, so she wasn’t about to do that again. As she finished curling her hair, what she was about to do finally set in. She was going to do the Yule Ball with Viktor Krum, professional Quidditch player. This wasn’t going to be a drama-filled night of putting up with Ron and his teenage boy idiocy. This was going to be fun. She was going to make it fun. With that in mind, she slipped into her dress with a small smile on her face.

“Pansy. Hey, you look nice.”
“What the fuck Draco. You look terrible. I look awesome.”
”Damn those Slytherin girls. No respect,” Draco thought to himself. The girls in Slytherin were just simply too much for anyone with any self respect to handle… at least the ones that were within Draco’s range. Why didn’t he think to just ask a Ravenclaw? It would have made his life so much easier.

“Let’s just go, Pansy. Sooner we get this over with the better.”
“Fine.”

As she walked down the stair case, she felt all of the eyes turning to her. Harry turned from staring at Cho Chang (she had to get him to talk to her), to looking in awe at his friend. She saw Ron, the idiot he was, realizing how he should have asked her himself. Then she saw Viktor. She didn’t really think he was anyone that she would be interested in, but with the way he was looking at her now that opinion might change throughout the night.

As Draco was walking into the Great Hall, he heard sudden murmuring and thought that Fleur Delacour was probably wearing a low cut dress that would make many Hollywood stars turn their heads, so he turned around to rush Pansy along when he saw her.
“Holy shit.” Hermione Granger confused the hell out of him. She was annoying and nosy, but then she turned around and was punching him in the face and looking amazing in this princess dress. There was something different about her. Something that wasn’t just the two dimensional girl that everyone else in this stupid school seemed to be.

“Hermione.”
“Yes, Viktor?”
“That Malfoy that you and your friends hate is staring at you.”
“Draco? Viktor, that’s ridiculous. He’s an idiot who likes to make fun of people. Besides. I’m Muggle Born, he’s probably just plotting how to destroy my life.”
“Oh. Okay.” She could see in his eyes that he didn’t believe her, that he thought she had feelings for that douche bag. No. Never. Draco, however gorgeous and mysterious as he may be, was a rude, rich teenage boy who took pleasure in making her and Harry’s life miserable.

She was dancing her heart out. Viktor was actually pretty sweet, even if he didn’t talk a lot. They were having a blast, and were just going to stop to take a break and get a drink when she bumped into someone.
“Sor---“ she began to shout over the music, until she saw who it was. Draco. His eyes met hers, and she knew in an instant that Viktor had been right. But that wasn’t what scared her. What scared her, is that she was intrigued. What scared Hermione more than anything was that she thought she was indeed returning the favor.
