Don’t panic.
These were the two words Tonks was saying to herself in her head, over and over again, for what she considered a very valid reason. Looking down the table in the Kitchen at Grimauld Place, she stopped at Remus. He was sitting back comfortably, a butter beer in one hand, holding a casual and easy conversation with Sirius and Kingsley. How the bloody hell could he be so casual after what he’d just done?
Or, at least, what she thought he’d done.
But really, it must have been. If he hadn’t wanted to, he would have just stepped around her. It was that easy. Or a simple “excuse me” would have sufficed.
And usually Remus had such good manners. What had happened to them?
Chewing on the cord of her sweatshirt, she thought. Surely that hadn’t been the move of an innocent man trying to get a bar of chocolate? Surely even a chocoholic werewolf wouldn’t have acted that way without specific reasoning?
Had Remus Lupin really been openly flirting with her, here, for everyone to see?
Not that anyone had seen, unfortunately. Not even Sirius, who was usually very good at spotting that sort of thing. He would be teasing both her and Remus right now if he’d seen.
But she couldn’t have imagined that her skin was still buzzing, and she only hoped the heat that was searing where he had touched her wasn’t turning into a blush on her cheeks.
She was trying very hard to convince herself that he had just been particularly keen to reach the chocolate, but she wasn’t doing a very good job. She remained entirely unconvinced of his innocence in the situation.
He had after all, put his hands solidly on her hips to move her. Now, that could have been innocent enough, if he hadn’t run his hand slowly and very surely across her lower back, with one finger right above her belt, before moving on. And maybe it was just her, but she rather thought that running your hand along someone’s lower back screamed fairly loudly “I want you.”
It had to mean something. Either he knew absolutely nothing about body language or signals, or he was toying with her, the bastard.
Looking again, she caught his eye, and this time noticed the slight upturned mouth- he was smirking! Oh, he was evil. He probably knew she was spending all this time, alone at the other end of the table thinking about what he’d done. How he’d touched her. And she had to admit, it really hadn’t been at all unpleasant.
But after seeing that little smirk, she was determined to pay him back. She wasn’t as flustered as he wanted to think she was, and two could play at this game.
Now she just needed to come up with an even better form of revenge.
It didn’t take long for her to remember how flustered Remus had been the one time she’d accidentally-on-purpose tripped and fallen into his lap. Remembering back, she was sure she could use this to her advantage. She would just need to step it up a little bit…
Just as she was wondering how she could have a legitimate reason for sitting on his lap, Bill sat down in the only vacant seat.
Perfect.
Stretching, she wandered over. “Wotcher! Not interrupting anything, am I?”
“Nope.” Sirius yawned. “Just teasing Bill about his new girlfriend.” Sirius winked at Bill, who rolled his eyes.
“oooh! Anyone I know?” Lightly, she perched herself on Remus’ lap. She could feel him tense up- but it was only for a second, and then he rested one of his arms on her thigh.
Sirius raised an eyebrow at her, clearly waiting to see how she was going to react. Just to annoy him she shrugged, placing a hand on top of Remus’ as Bill announced he was dating Fleur Delacour, one of the triwizard champions.
She was going to have to be subtle, and it wouldn’t be easy surrounded by this many people, especially with Sirius now watching her like a hawk. Although, at this rate, it might be worth letting Sirius see, just for the look on his face.
It was a lot easier, apparently, for men to be distracted. None of them were really paying full attention to Bill- especially Sirius, whose eyes flitted back to her every time she so much as breathed. Thankfully, Bill had a photo of Fleur, who was not remotely ugly, and while they were all craning their necks to get a better view, she casually moved her free hand behind her, resting it very firmly in the crotch of Remus’ trousers.
That did the trick.
Every single part of his body froze, and she could only imagine his facials. With a quick pat, she brought her hand back round, folding it demurely with its counterpart on her own lap.
She heard Remus let out a short, strangled gasp, and smirked.
It slid off her face as soon as she saw Sirius, whose mouth was wide open, a look of utter glee on his face.
That was an obvious signal to leave as soon as possible.
Jumping to her feel, she announced she had a report to finish, and sped out of the room, turning back only for a second when she reached the doorway to see Remus’ face, still looking absolutely stunned. Sirius was whispering in his ear, his smirk even wider than her own.
Revenge had been carried out. And frankly, she had quite enjoyed it.
A loud cough behind her announced someone else’s presence- turning, expecting Sirius, she was pleasantly surprised to find Remus standing awkwardly in front of her.
“Can I ask what that was all about?”
Her heart sank at the tone of confusion in his voice.
“Well- you- when you were getting the chocolate. And you moved me out of the way… you ran your hand along my back.”
He frowned. “I did?”
“You did. So low down I’m not even sure where you hand was is still considered part of my back.”
“Are you sure? I think you may have… misinterpreted my actions. I’m sorry… but I really don’t remember doing that.”
Maybe she really had imagined it?
“No, you did! And then after, I looked at you when you were talking to Sirius, you were smirking.”
“Sirius was telling jokes. You know him, they’re all wildly inappropriate-“
“So was putting your hand there in the middle of the kitchen!” Tonks pouted, crossing her arms.
“Surely you don’t mean I went like this-” he ran his hand once again across her lower back, sending tingles down her spine- “In front of everyone? In front of Sirius?” he sounded doubtful.
“Yes.”
He sighed. “Well… If I started it… I guess I better finish it.”
His mouth was suddenly pressed and moving against hers, and she was taken completely by surprise. Just as she started to respond, he pulled away.
“you- you knew-”
“Of course I did. I’m not a Marauder for nothing, you know.” With a foxy smirk on his face, he patted her on the head, heading back for the kitchen.
She was going to get him for that.
