Rose Weasley approached her blond friend in the library with slight trepidation. She was nervous about asking the other twelve year old about learning to understand his communication style. He had, after all, denied his father what she was about to ask for. She sat next to him and placed a piece of parchment and a self-inking quill on the table between them.
Scorpius Hyperion malfoy looked up at his Ravenclaw friend and smiled. Rose smiled back weakly before speaking, “I want to ask you something.” The Gryffindor nodded in a way that said “go on.” Rose took a deep breath. “I want your permission for Albus to teach me to understand your sign language.”
Scorpius frowned slightly and gestured vaguely. Rose pushed the parchment and quill towards him. He picked up the quill and wrote down one word, “Why?”
“I’d like to be able to talk to you,” Rose said. She took a short pause. “Just you. Without Albus around.” She smiled slightly. “Why is Albus the only one who gets to understand you?”
Scorpius wrote again, “It seemed like a good idea at the time,” and shrugged.
“And what about now?” Rose asked, hoping this was leading where she wanted it to.
Scorpius’s frown deepened as he wrote, “I’m not so sure anymore.”
Rose grinned. “Exactly! Albus can’t be around all the time, so why not have a back up?” She paused to let this thought sink in. “How about me?”
Scorpius sighed. “Alright,” he wrote on the parchment.

“I’m hungry!” Albus Severus Potter announced one March afternoon as he, his best friend, and his cousin sat in the Gryffindor Common Room working on their Potions essays.
“We just had dinner,” Rose Weasley said, not even bothering to look up from the parchment in front of her.
“So?” Albus asked. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“So, you shouldn’t be hungry.”
“And yet...I am.” The brunet closed his potions text book and sighed. “I can’t think on an empty stomach.”
Rose rolled her eyes. “Your stomach is not empty.” She turned the page of her book and continued to write. “Stop trying to get out of doing your work.”
Albus frowned at his cousin. “But I am hungry.” He pouted for a moment before turning to his best friend. “Wanna go down to the kitchen with me?”
Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy nodded and smiled. He’d do anything to put off writing this essay. He closed his book and stood up, motioning to Albus to follow suit. “Fine. You two go waste time, but don’t come crying to me when you don’t have your essays done on time!” Rose called after them as they left the table.
The two Gryffindors made their way down to the kitchen, Albus chatting excitedly about what the house elves would give them to eat all the way there. Scorpius tickled the pear in the bowl of fruit and they stepped into the immaculately clean room. They were instantly surrounded by a large crowd of bowing house elves. “Mister Potter! Mr. Malfoy!” the elves chorused.
Albus grinned. “Hello everyone! Dinner was lovely but I’m still hungry,” he announced.
Almost instantly a tray of finger sandwiches appeared and seemed to float over to the boys. “Thanks!” Albus said, grabbing a sandwich and stuffing it into his mouth. Scorpius smiled at the assembled elves and took a sandwich off the tray as well.
