The ministry was always bustling with activity now, and the auror department was busier than ever. But Tonks couldn’t stand it. They were the good guys. They were supposed to catch the bad guys.
So why was everything so backwards? Was she the only person who had noticed this? Because no one else seemed to be doing a damn thing about it, and it had her royally pissed off.
She took breaks as often as she could without being noticed now. Even when people were on their breaks they never stayed in the department staff room, preferring to go out somewhere, or find friends from other departments. The staff room was, generally speaking, absolutely silent.
And silence was the one thing she needed now.
Not because she needed space to think- hell no. thinking about anything other than work was the last thing she wanted, as anything and everything would someone how remind her of the fact that her husband had left her, and she was pregnant and alone.
She just needed to sleep. She was always so tired nowadays; she had no idea if it was because of the baby growing inside her, or if it was something else. She could be fatally ill and she’d never know.
She couldn’t sleep at home. Sleeping in the bed she’d shared with Remus gave her terrible dreams. She was staying on the couch, while she figured out what she was doing. Needless to say, the couch was hardly comfortable to sleep on.
The couches in the staff room, however, being rarely used, were perfect for sleeping.
She was just dozing off when the door creaked open, and she could hear someone humming.
Her heart plummeted as she recognized the voice instantly.
Scabior.
Sighing, she rubbed her eyes and sat up. She hated that he was always hanging round in law enforcement now, him and his stupid band of snatchers waiting for list updates and for reported sightings.
It was sick. She couldn’t believe he’d signed up for it. She never would have thought it. But then, he’d changed a lot from the Scabior she’d known and loved.
Possibly the only thing that hadn’t changed was those damn pants, she thought angrily, and that stupid bloody ribbon he kept his hair back with. He had his back to her, making a coffee, but he saw her reflection in the glass cabinet and turned, one eyebrow raised.
“You look terrible.” He said flatly, before turning back to his coffee, and his own reflection in the glass. “I look awesome. Don’t you agree, Nymph? I mean, now I have this swanky job and a fancy office… even my own coffee mug. Living the dream. Who would’ve guessed?”
She’d given up a long time ago trying to get him to call her Tonks. But it was true, she did look terrible. She hadn’t slept in what seemed like an age.
“It’s not like you earned any of it.” She muttered angrily, stretching. Her break was almost over. Could he not have waited five more minutes to come annoy her?
“That’s the thing though,” he gestured at her with his teaspoon. “You had to do three years of training, and you’re still only in the junior section. A little sneaking here, an imperius curse there… BAM! Job secured.” He smirked. “I’m more talented than all of you. I see that clearly now.”
Tonks just rolled her eyes, wishing she could ignore him.
He sat next to her, ruining the whole comfortable level of the couch and throwing the cushions off their balanced and comfy position. She scowled at him.
“Don’t look so Melencholy, Nymph, I’m just playing with you. We all know you deserve this more than I do.”
“And yet you’re still going on about it… is there nothing else you could do instead of annoying me? I’ really not in the mood for any of your crap.” Standing, she went to the small fridge and pulled out her water bottle.
“I’ve been practicing nudging meatballs across the table with my nose.” He shrugged. “But it’s almost enjoyable to see you like this.” His smirk grew wider. “I always did like telling you I told you so.”
She knew he was getting at Remus. Almost defensively, she crossed her arms, tucking her left hand, still displaying her wedding ring, away from sight. “Shut up.”
“I don’t think so.” He put his coffee cup on the table, standing to face her. “Because all along you’ve been saying he was different, and that he loved you… maybe this is just me, but I don’t think your lover is supposed to leave when you tell them you’re carrying their spawn.”
That hurt. It hurt almost as much as the fact he even knew she was pregnant, and that he knew Remus had left.
“Oh, you’re being watched alright. So I’d be careful If I were you. I wouldn’t do anything out of order.” He put heavy emphasis on that last word, and she got his message loud and clear. Don’t have anything to do with anyone in the order if you know what’s good for you.
She just shook her head. “How did you change so much?”
When she looked up, his face was set. “I had to grow up. Having your heart broken and your illusions of love shattered does that to you.”
“Scabior… I didn’t-”
“Don’t. just don’t. I can hardly look at you now. Not when you’ve got that thing growing inside you.” The hurt in his voice was obvious, but so was the hatred.
“I didn’t break your heart. I stopped talking to you. If you wanted me that much, you would’ve apologized.”
“It all amounted to the same thing. I lost you to them.”
“They’re my friends.” She said stonily. Then she sighed. “This is exactly what happened then. You hated my friends, I hated yours. We were too different to ever work.”
“At least I’m fully human.”
Her eyes flashed red. “If you ever imply that he is some sort of monster again, you will be sorry. And you’ve seen me hex before. So I’d watch my back if I were you.”
Turning away, she marched straight past him.
He could practice nudging meatballs all he wanted, but she wasn’t going to talk to him ever again.
