It was supposed to be over. This, everything, it was all supposed to be over. Scorpius leaned against the door, pushing all his weight back against it, trying to ignore the noise from the other side.
"Where's your fucking dad when we need him, huh?" He didn't open his eyes. Everyone would know who he was talking to. Opening his eyes would make everything more real.
"He's at Saint Mungo's," James snapped. His eyes were clenched shut too, but for different reasons. By his side, Albus was reciting the incantation for the now familiar vulnera sanentur. "Mum was...you know. Attacked. Dad got her out but..." Albus scoffed as he pulled his wand away from James' leg.
"Sad day when the Saviour can barely save his wife. Guess we're all doomed." There was a hint of cold laughter in his voice.
"Shut up." Teddy was sitting in the corner, a book open on his lap. "Don't talk like that. We'll get out of this fine."
"I don't think you've noticed, but there's a hoard of Inferi right outside." As Scorpius finished speaking, the sentence was punctuated by a piercing scream and more slamming against the door. "Can somebody fucking help me here? If I move, they get in and I can't get to my fucking wand."
"It's no use," Albus said, pushing himself to his feet anyway. "They've gotten resistant to light. Rumour is fire isn't working much any more."
"We've got each other." Teddy was still reading his book. "That's good enough."
"More food for the Inferi!" Scorpius laughed. It was loud, too loud. It sounded too much like sobbing and Albus flinched. "Give it up, Lupin. We're practically dead already." With that, he stepped away from the door, pushing Albus with him. They looked at each other, conveying everything without needing to say anything. Together, they picked up James, pulled him to Teddy's corner and together, they sat. Together, the fabulous four who'd once believed they could end this, they watched as the door burst open.
Teddy put down his book.
