James couldn't really remember how he'd ended up in the coat closet. Everything had that familiar fog of too much fire whiskey, and it was already getting difficult to remember which way was up and which way was down. He wasn't even really sure he'd purposely gone into the closet or if he was just looking for something else.
The closet door opened, letting in a wave of noise and music. James squinted at the silhouette of the person in the door way for a moment, trying to figure out who it was.
"James?" The person said, stepping into the closet. It was Teddy, James realized. Or a very good Teddy imposter, who'd gone to the hassle of dying his hair turquoise and getting some piercings. "James, what're you doing in here?" The door shut behind him.
"I have no idea." James grinned at him, leaning forward to rest against Teddy for no apparent reason. "It's kind of dark in here." Teddy reached around James for a moment, tugging at his back pocket and pulling out his wand. He handed it to James with an incredibly condescending raised eyebrow.
"You're a wizard, James." He was smirking as glared at him, before he pulled out his own wand. Soon enough, the closet was somewhat lighter. James could actually see things, like the logo on Teddy's shirt, and straight up his nose.
"You're really pretty," He mumbled, stepping backwards so he could look at Teddy properly. "Weird nose though. You should change that." Teddy frowned. His hand came up to cover his nose. James shook his head at that, then reached out to tug his hand away.
"My nose is fine," Teddy said. "But thank you anyway. I think. Pretty isn't exactly the most common compliment for men." James grinned at that, earning a smile from Teddy. "You're pretty too. Even when you're bladdered." He leaned back against the wall, stretching his legs out so they slipped between James'. "So, are you ready to face the party again?" James shook his head.
"I don't know half the people out there."
"You're related to most of them," Teddy pointed out. "Weasley family weddings are kind of scary though, I'll give you that. Lot's of...eccentricity."
"And red hair." James reached up to tug at his own hair. He'd always been thankful he'd gotten a nice auburn, versus the bright orange of his family.
"I quite like the red." For a moment, Teddy's hair flickered to the famed Weasley red, before flickering back to his favoured shade of blue. "It suits you." James blinked at him. "I suppose I can't find any reason for you not to stay in here though," Teddy carried on, confusing James with the sudden subject change. "At least in here, you're not getting illegally drunk..er."
"I'm seventeen," James muttered. "Almost."
"Not for another two weeks," Teddy pointed out. "And then there'll be another Weasley party for you to hide from." James glared again and Teddy smiled, pushing himself up off the wall and wrapping an arm around James' shoulder. "Come on. We'll go find you something non-alcoholic to drink and somewhere better to hide. Somewhere with a bit more space." The door was pushed open again and the same wave of noise hit them.
"You better get me something good for my birthday," James muttered under his breath as he saw Lily already heading in his direction. Teddy just smiled.
