Here “I know you’re hear somewhere…”
The wheezy voice echoed in the silent room, even as a small, dark-haired Slytherin second year crept away from the door. Having just slid out of the library in time, she sprinted down the corridor and darted around the corner. With her attention focused behind her, she did not slow down in time.
Crash!
Two figures sprawled across the hallway, untangling themselves after their fall. Shaking her head, she looked to see who had been her unplanned roadblock. Gryffindor colors, messy dark hair, glasses over green eyes, and that famous scar…she had crashed straight into Harry Potter.
“Oh, no!”
He glanced at her as he straightened his glasses.
“Are you all right?”
She blinked, confused for a moment.
Why is he being so nice?
As she did not answer, his frown grew concerned. He leaned forward and reached for her shoulder.
“Hey, are you all right?”
Giving a quick nod, she scrambled to her feet.
“Yes, I’m fine, but Filch…”
Meow…
Their heads snapped sideways. Seated at the junction of the hallways, peering at them in smug satisfaction, sat Mrs. Norris. As the cat looked back over her shoulder, apparently calling for her master, Harry jumped to his feet and grabbed her hand.
“Come on! Quick!”
He dragged her through corridors in the castle that she had never seen before, including some of the secret passageways. While they began to pick up some distance, Filch always seemed to be on their heels. They had no time to find a hiding place or get to safety. With a muffled exclamation, Harry pulled her down a short hall and through a doorway.
“In here.”
As he stood at the doorway, trying to listen for the caretaker, she cast a quick Lumos and glanced around. In the dim light of her wand, she realized they were in a supply closet.
I don’t believe this. All I wanted was to find that book Granger recommended. For being a Muggle-born, she’s got good taste. And yet, here I am in a closet with Potter of all people!
She giggled.
He flicked a look over his shoulder. She shrugged.
“I’m sorry, but this is quite honestly beyond funny.”
Turning, he leaned on the wall.
“Filch is at the end of this hall, so we’ll need a few more minutes before we can go. Why is it so funny? We’re this close to getting caught after curfew.”
“I know, but look at us, a Slytherin, stuck in a closet with a Gryffindor…not just any Gryffindor, but you.”
Rolling his eyes, he snorted.
“Do they have a meeting in the common room to warn all of you against me or something?”
She gave him an unexpected smile.
“Lets just say my older sister has very definite ideas on who I should and should not be seen with. If I get caught with you, in a dark closet…”
He flushed.
“Oh for…you’re twelve! I’d no more catch you in a closet than I would Ginny Weasley!”
“Maybe, but just because you wouldn’t…never mind.”
Now, he frowned.
“Has someone…?”
She quickly stepped towards the door.
“Surely Filch is gone by now?”
Although he continued frowning, he nodded. They stepped quietly into the hallway and prepared to go to their separate Houses. Before she could leave, he touched her arm gently.
“You don’t have to be afraid. We can still help you.”
She shook her head, the light of her eyes dimming just a bit. He dropped his hand.
“Okay…be careful…oh, hey, what’s your name anyway?”
Now she grinned, and took off down the corridor.
