It wasn’t that Arthur wanted to spend all his free time out in the barn. It was just that with Bill, Charlie, and Percy home for the holidays the Burrow was suddenly more crowded and he could sneak away. Fred, George, and Ron were begging their older brothers for stories of school while Ginny tried to stay out of the way of her older siblings and not be noticed. She would sit quietly in a corner playing with her dollie until one of the older boys bothered her. Nothing like the youngest in the family getting mad and throwing a tantrum. Even more dangerous as she managed to make things move around the room without a wand even, and she was still so very young.
Yes, this seemed like the perfect time to sneak out. Arthur stared lovingly at the beat up Ford sitting in his garage. With quite a lot of work and some manuals, Arthur had managed to put the car back together. Originally it had no doors or boot, but he knew with a little hard work and some tender words he could put the old girl back together again. He rubbed a hand over a headlight and was pleased when the front of it didn’t fall off or spring apart. He was even more pleased to slip in and sit in the driver’s seat. With a childish grin, he pretended to turn the car over and much like Ron when he was younger, made some very animated car noises. He pulled the wheel left and right, turning the car on the invisible motorway. He tipped his hat to the ladies, stopped at crosswalks to let children walk across the street, and even pushed a few lights when they were turning yellow. An unexpected crash from inside the Burrow brought Arthur back from his daydream to the present. He quickly got out of the car and all but kissed the hood. “I’ll be back soon.” Quickly, he ran to the house, hoping that Molly hadn’t noticed how long he was gone.

Someone had let the bugbears out at the Ministry. Nothing like complete and utter chaos to get everybody sent home early. Though he was upset not to be making money for the day, Arthur certainly couldn’t stay at work any longer. Rushing home, he was beyond pleased to see that Molly’s clock said that she was out of the House with all the kids. With a grin, he ran back to the car. Oh what a beautiful car. He opened the doors wide and let the sun glint off the paint job. As battered as she was, Arthur couldn’t help his need to spend time with all things Muggle. With his newest book, he pulled out his wand. Sooner or later he was going to figure out how to make the car fly. He wanted to take a grand trip with Molly some day, and he planned to do it in that very car. It would be just the two of them once all the kids had gone off to school. Even little Ginny was going to go some day, even though it was still years to come.
Carefully he began to cast a spell on each wheel, making sure they were entirely steady before moving on to the next. After that he carefully worked on the chasse, making sure to distribute the car evenly so it wouldn’t list or tilt when it finally did fly. Oh Molly was going to be so surprised some day when she was in it with him. It was almost like he could hear her now.
“ARTHUR!”
Wait, maybe he could. Quickly he closed up the doors and ran back to the House, grease on his nice shirt and smudged on his face. He, of course, was oblivious.

Arthur was so obsessed with his car (among other things) he even dreamt of them. He made little car noises in his sleep as the vehicle flew over the Eiffel Tower as he kissed Molly. They would spend long days over the Rhine. Evenings in Venice. Oh they would go everywhere in that car. He could not imagine any other way. This whole dream was so sickeningly sweet it made a Disney movie look like lemons. There were even times where Arthur would wake in the middle of the night and stare at the window, seeing the top of the garage and wondering about the car. He had to go out. He had to get his fix. Something had to be done to stop this sick obsession. Arthur would get up in the morning drained, he would get no sleep as he lay and looked outside just wondering.
It was really a very lucky thing that the Ford seemed to have a mind of his own. Or perhaps it was Arthur who had messed up some Charm along the way. Either way, it was evident that when the car was turned on, it was not going to ‘behave’ the way he wanted it to. Looking fondly at the car, Arthur sighed sadly. Or perhaps it was happily. Now he was going to be able to resume something more of a normal life instead of spending all his time tinkering away in the garage. It was back to Celistina Warbeck music and helping Molly with chores. Thus was the life of Arthur Weasley. It was about that time that Arthur found a bicycle. Perhaps he could treat that the same way he did the car and then fix them both!
