It was that time again. The middle of August was always a busy time in the shop where the wands lay dormant the rest of the year. They knew when someone was coming for them, though. It wasn’t just Ollivander’s excitement about a new person to match, but someone without a wand just had a feeling about them. An aura if you will. Of course the wands knew what they were looking for and sometimes it was just as much fun to make a ruckus when old man Ollivander made the wrong choice as it was just to feel someone near. There was nothing, of course, like the feeling of actually finding the right person. Each wand had its own soul beyond the core. The core naturally told about what kind of person they were looking for. The unicorns wanted the most pure souls, those free of blemish and would go on in continued purity. The dragons wanted fighters and defenders. They wanted someone fiery enough to stand up for themselves and perhaps were a bit of a loner. The phoenix always held out for something special, but it seemed as if only the phoenix knew what that was. The hippogriff wanted those who would go on to great things and would later command respect in their jobs, or sometimes they just wanted someone versatile.

The woods were not as demanding, but complimented the core. They could be firm and unyielding, but those were the ones with the most reward. It may take a year or so longer to fully master the harder woods but they would be the ones who gave the most back in return. Some were springy and good for charms. Others were yielding and loved to work with plants and would adjust to the greater cycles. Some were gentle and easy to master, but they were easy going and often not as strong, but being gentle often paid off for a Healer. Each had their own strength and weaknesses and dictated if they wanted a person to be like them, or very unlike them.

The particular wand in question was just at 10 inches, rather inflexible, and had a dragon heartstring in its core. It wanted someone with strength and was not afraid. Someone who would take the time to master it, and then it would give it everything in return. The owner would have to be willing to stand up for themselves and what they believed in, no matter what the cause. They could be quick or slow, ideas for bettering the future or for the destruction of it. The wand didn’t much care, so long as they were not afraid. You see, the wand itself needed a master and needed to serve. Someone would give into it would not be a good choice. This is why when the first person in the shop that day got to try it as an option (they later had a longer wand that was more flexible, but they did keep the dragon heartstring core) it shot off fireworks that looped back right at the boy holding it. Luckily Ollivander was quick enough to keep it from harming anyone. It did get a brief scolding before being put back on the shelf, however.

It felt like forever before the next child came in, but really it was only a matter of hours. She was quick and understood magic already. She came from a wizarding family and knew what she wanted and was going to work to get it. The wand was pleased and hoped that it would get a turn because this could really be the one. She first tried a short, soft wand, which sputtered off a few puffs of smoke and then did nothing. She had overwhelmed it with her desire. Ollivander seemed pleased, and chose a much firmer wand. This had a better if not more drastic result. This wand nearly smoked the entire room out and took quite a bit of work from all the adults to get it cleared out before she could try another wand. This time it was a hard wand with a hippogriff talon, which after she swished it flew out of her hand and went around the room like a crazed snitch. It took Ollivander quite a bit of coaxing to get it to return back to eye level before he could safely trap it in a box. He had found her the right length and stiffness, it was the core. The wand in question was nearly springing out of its box with excitement. Yes, this was really it. If it had the chance there was next to no doubt this was the right owner for it!

Ollivander reached up and plucked it from the wall. It nearly shivered with anticipation. “Ah yes.” The old man said, handing over the wand to the girl. “I think this is it.” She picked it up and smiled. The wand felt her energy and nearly as soon as she moved it, sent out fireworks of all colors across the room. It then allowed her to pick up an old key and levitate it across the room. “Yes,” Ollivander smiled. “You couldn’t have gotten a better one. Very fine, this wand. You’ll have to take the time to work with it, but if you master it fully, there will be nothing you can’t do.” The red haired girl smiled and looked at her newest possession.
