“Step aside, girl. You need not die this night. I come only for the child.”

Lily Potter stood firm in front of the crib. Tears were flowing down her face. She knew James must be dead. Lord Voldemort would not be in this room otherwise.

The Dark Lord pointed his wand at Lily’s heart but still she remained firm. She was going to die and so was Harry. She had no way of helping him escape. She had already tried disapparating, but Voldemort had put a spell over the house to make that impossible.

“Please, take me instead. Just leave Harry. He’s just a baby,” she pleaded, knowing that it was no use.

“Aveda Kadavre!”

Lily flinched, but she didn’t feel the spell hitting her. She could still feel the crib poking against her back and slowly she opened her eyes. She gasped as she saw Voldemort laying on the ground at her feet, then looked up at the attacker. Her saviour.

“Severus.”

Pale faced and hand shaking, Snape looked up at the young woman, his dark eyes meeting her green ones.

“I…I couldn’t let him…I heard the plan and I…I knew I had to…”

Lily couldn’t believe it. She was alive. They both were.

*~*~*

“Mum, let go, you’re going to make me late for the train.”

Lily just pressed Harry closer, raining kisses on his head, “You be good! If you have any problems go straight to your father.”

“Mummmmm I’m not going to see dad for every little thing. The other kids will think I’m a baby!”

“Lily, it’s not like you won’t get to see him every weekend if you wish,” Severus placed a hand on his wife’s shoulder, “He’ll be fine.”

“Harry!”

“Ron!”

Harry wiggled out of his mother’s tight embrace and rushed off to see his long-time friend.

“Can you believe it, we’re finally getting to go. Is Eileen jealous?”

Harry grinned laughing, “Yeah, she had a fit the entire way here. What about Ginny?”

“Same,” Ron chuckled, “They’re over with my mum crying about it together.”

Harry looked over where Ron’s parents were standing with his younger half-sister and Ron’s younger sister. Molly Weasley saw him looking over and gave him a smile and a wave which Harry returned. The Weasley’s were like a second family to Harry.

“Excited for your first day, Ronald?” Harry’s step-father asked politely.

“Yes, sir,” Ron nodded, “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure Harry doesn’t get into too much trouble.”

“More like you’ll help him get into it,” Lily shook her head.

A whistle pierced the air and Harry found himself being squeezed once more by his mother.

“Mum. Mum!!”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m just going to miss you so much,” Lily released him, eyes streaming with tears, “I love you, Harry.”

“I love you too, mum,” Harry returned, blushing with embarrassment and then with one last hug he ran off towards the train.

Lily watched him leave. Just one more parent in a crowd of hundreds. Snape gave her a quick kiss, assuring her that he would look after Harry and see her that weekend.

Lily waved at her son in the window, hit as she often was by how much he looked like her first husband. She smiled through her tears.

James…you would be so proud of him. I wish you could see him. I wish you were here with me.

The Hogwarts Express began it’s journey and Lily knew that everything was going to be alright.

581/50 = 11.62 + 10 = 21.62 22 points for Gryffindor!
