He has to die. He wishes he would.
Now, this instant. It would be perfect and beautiful. It’s a coward wish but he’s a selfish boy.
He wants to die now, he wants this to be his last memory of life.
Lily’s parents are okay. Mr. Evans is a bit clumsy, but he can be funny and Mrs. Evans is joyful and warm. Even Petunia is quite okay. The blonde girl is silent, a nice change, arms crossed and eyes glued to the moving figures from outside.
And Lily, Lily is there, next to him. Beautiful, shining, nervous and smiling.
He smiles as well and notices how close their hands are, how easy it would be to hold hers.
Take me out tonight
Where there's music and there's people
Who are young and alive
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven't got one anymore.
Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people
And I want to see life
Driving in your car
Oh please don't drop me home
Because it's not my home, it's their home
And I'm welcome no more
They had gone out, the Evans and him, to celebrate. They are on the way back after a delicious dinner. He wants to stay there forever, but he can’t tell the adults about his father. They wouldn’t understand or would think he’s exaggerating.
September is near; he knows exactly how many days, how many minutes and how many seconds. He’s anxious and scared. Yes, he’ll be able to learn, perform magic and meet other kids, but he doesn’t need to meet any other witch or wizard if he has Lily. He doesn’t want her to meet any other kids.
Right now, magic is only theirs. Her parents can understand. Petunia can know some things and be mad with them, but only Lily and he can really feel what it is.
Things will change when they get to the castle, he knows it. It won’t be hard for her to make new friends, to have boys after her, trying to subtly steal her from his side.
There are lights out there. Trucks and cars move and so does Mr. Evan’s car. The adults are laughing, and Lily’s dad almost gets hit by a van.
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well the pleasure, the privilege is mine.
“Dad!” Petunia calls the man, angry and scared, “Stop talking about what a we… ‘special person’ Lily is and focus on the road,” the girl demands him.
She’s silent immediately after and goes back to staring the moving life outside the car, avoiding Lily’s hurt eyes. But then he looks at him, and he smiles at her.
His smile falters as he recognizes a park.
His house is near, he suddenly notices and something digs a hole inside his stomach, leaving him empty. He doesn’t want to go back to his house. And his father certainly doesn’t want him there either.
He wonders, yet again, if he could live with the Evans. He has a plan, a slightly developed plan. It’s not finished or perfect, but he has decided not to go too far with it, not to get too involved and enthusiastic because there is a chance they won’t accept him.
He could clean the house, cut the grass and get a job to pay his food and clothes, and they could let him live with them during summertime. He could even try to be nice, or at least civilized with Petunia.
But he doesn’t say a word about it. He never does.
Take me out tonight
Take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
And in the darkened underpass
I thought Oh God, my chance has come at last
But then a strange fear gripped me
And I just couldn't ask
His house is painfully near, and he can practically hear the screaming roar in bitterness. They are monsters calling his name, demanding his presence.
Take me out tonight
Oh take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
Driving in your car
I never, never want to go home
Because I haven't got one
No, I haven't got one
He has to die, here, now. Next to Lily, with her smile and eyes, with him being the only magical person she knows. He’s special now, he’s special to her but that won’t last. She’ll meet other wizards. They’ll be handsome, gracious, charming, with real families and he’ll be left behind.
But now he’s in her dad’s car. She’s smiling too, and her hand almost touches his.
It’s a perfect moment and he wishes for death to immortalize the seconds.
Those ugly walls he calls his home are just a block away, there isn’t enough time.
Take me out tonight
Oh take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
Driving in your car
I never, never want to go home
Because I haven't got one
No, I haven't got one
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes in to us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die.
And if a ten ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well the pleasure, the privilege is mine
They don’t die. Not that night, and they won’t die together either.
The car finally stops. His legs feel too heavy to move but he gets out of the vehicle anyway.
“We’ll see each other tomorrow at the park, right?” Lily asks him. He nods, taking her words as a sweet song to listen again and again until the next day comes.
His house is cold and grey. His dad is drinking somewhere. His mother is crying somewhere, but he’s too happy tonight, too selfish to stop and stare the dark holes his parents are. He won’t be dragged down by them; he won’t be drowned by the sadness reigning the house.
He has Lily.
