In his pocket, the Gobstones clunked loudly, stored there by Bill before the patronus begging for his presence had arrived. Bill had been so offended when he had to leave, but then again, it happened more and more these days. He'd just sit down with his nephews and something would come up with the Order, something that required a wizard with more experience than the Potters or that crowd, and he and Fabian would have to leave their family behind, wondering again if this would be their last mission.

Their brown eyes locked on each other and Gideon sighed, pointing his wand at his pocket to silence the sounds which could give them away. They'd been called to the Leaky Cauldron by Dumbledore - it was always Dumbledore, orchestrating and sending them places with no notice. He shouldn't begrudge the old man, but it was so hard not to, not when it was he and Gideon more than Dorcas or Marlene, despite the fact they were just as experienced and just as talented. They didn't talk about it, though, because Gideon was sure that there would be some explanation - Dumbledore could explain anything, he could talk his way out of a paper bag.

The sky crackled above them with static electricity and tension, the unspoken question of “Do they know we're here?” echoing through their heads with every step they took. Simultaneously, their grips on their wands tightened to the point of pain, quiet fear cloaking them. They'd deny it, of course - they were Gryffindors, they were members of the Order of the Phoenix, they weren't meant to be afraid of anything. But they were scared, scared of the lies that split the Order, scared of the violence which plagued the Wizarding world, scared of losing this war.

A sudden flash filled the air and Fabian fell backwards, a dull thump on the ground. Gideon whirled to throw up a shield charm, but from behind him the sound of manic laughter sounded. Here, there, everywhere - sounds and movement and light - he was surrounded, and even as instinct kicked in and spells flowed freely from his wand, the thought crossed his mind.

Is this the end?
