It was early in the season when Joscelind Wadcock received a bludger to the head that ended her Quidditch career. The Medi-wizards on staff reduced any swelling and long term injuries, but the Chaser stepped down from her playing role. However after a few months off she found she could not live without the game and has returned in a coaching role. Working under manager Philibert Deverill she leads the club with their aggressive style of play. The first several years of the decade were quiet. It was a card accumulation that kept regular keeper Bas Paterhook out of the Boxing Day match against the Montrose Magpies. Previously benched reserve keeper Oliver Wood stepped up to guard the hoops against the then League Leaders. It was Wood’s diving save while not even keeping on his broom that saved the game for United. Beater Ginger Hotlz saved Wood from hitting the ground at full force. This left United in 3rd position at the half way mark of the year. The finished that season top of the League, one of the big 3, per usual.
The next few years were a rapid build-up to greatness. With a rotation of Paterhook and Wood by the hoops, Deverill built his team around these two great keepers. At the end of the 97/98 season Paterhook stepped down, leaving Wood as the first choice Keeper. The addition of an experienced beater, Dmitri Igladov showed the strengthening of talent. His ferocious attitude suited the playmaking of Wadcock. A midseason buy from the Chudley Cannons brought a talented, relatively unknown seeker Abagail Heyl. It took only minutes for her to show her potential in a match against her former team. Spotting the snitch only thirty minutes into the match she went flying past opposing Chaser Melissa Dussart. Dussart was not paying the slightest bit of attention to the seeker in blue and gold, and was nearly tossed from her broom. Hanging on with one hand she cried foul, appealing to the ref. The ref, Howard Cook saw the entire event. He let the game continue until the snitch was out of sight again, then giving a card to Dussart for attempt to deceive the ref and diving. It was a great loss for the Cannons as the Chaser was then out for five games.
It was this same season that led United to their first League Win in nearly a dozen years. With the final piece of the puzzle, reserve player Marcello Romano, United stepped up their game fully. Wadcock wrote her best play and still currently most noted in the United Playbook. Along with constant training by Deverill , the United players began to see win after win. At half way through the season they were leading by only one win. As the second half of the season progressed traditionally strong teams faltered down the final stretch leaving only Puddlemere United to remain at the top of the table, winning the league by four games.
