Her name was Orlina, and she was cute and creative and loud. His name was Cedric, and he was handsome, and honorable and quiet. The seemed to be opposites, she a Ravenclaw and he a Hufflepuff, but they got along quite well. He admired her wit and originality and sparkle. She loved his sense of fair play, easy acceptance, and quiet charm. They were inseparable.
They lay there, on the bed in the quiet windowless room of requirement. He, flat on his back as she curled up against him, her Ravenclaw tie flung against the headboard. Orlina ruffled his hair, and he grinned handsomely, snuggling up against her.
“I never knew you had this in you,” he said, biting his lip.
“You never asked,” came her reply, sultry and low. “Besides, it’s always the quiet ones you have to look out for.” Orlina eyed him as if her were a chocolate frosted cupcake, her favorite. But they couldn’t get into anything more now, not with classes beginning in less than five minutes. Besides, just the secretive meetings in the room of requirement had her on edge enough. Even though they only used it for some private time to chat and snuggle, the idea that there were others out there who knew about the room made her nervous anyway.
“Oh, but you’re not quiet, I am. So it’s me that you should really be watching out for,” Cedric said, sitting up with a mischievous smirk.
Orlina stretched out like a cat. “True,” she agreed. “Who ever would suspect an upstanding Hufflepuff such as you of rendezvousing with a certain Ravenclaw in the room of requirement?” she asked, laughing as he draped an arm over her shoulder.
“And you say you don’t belong in Ravenclaw?” Cedric asked good-naturedly, dripping with sarcasm. “Why, you’re a certifiable genius!”
Orlina punched Cedric in the arm and he let out a yelp. “Ow!” he exclaimed.
“You big baby. That didn’t hurt,” came her reply.
“It might have,” Cedric said with a pout. Orlina stood and gathered up her things. She fastened her tie on and straightened the blue and bronze striped shirt she wore. Cedric tidied his yellow sweater. They each straightened the other’s prefect badge, as was ritual.
He enveloped her in a hug, nearly crushing her. “I’ll see you later?” Cedric asked.
“Sure,” she replied. “We can talk strategy for the maze tonight. I’ve also got a few handy spells you can use.” When she saw the odd look he gave her, she hastily added, “You can bet Hermione will be helping Harry.”
Cedric nodded. “I must be so lucky. The only girl at Hogwarts who can give Hermione Granger a run for her money. And she’s all mine.” He breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you for giving me a few moments of peace from it all.”
“I’ve got to run,” she said wistfully, before he dipped her into a quiet kiss.
“I hate leaving you,” he said. “Why couldn’t we be in the same house, Orli?” Cedric sulked. “I hate having to go all day without seeing you.”
Orlina sighed inwardly. She loved to hear Cedric express his feeling towards her. He truly was a wonderful boyfriend, and so romantic. They only shared a few stolen minutes throughout the day, but he made up for it by sneaking her cupcakes and love notes. “I’ll miss you, too,” was all she could say. She hated leaving him, too, and they got to see each other less because of the tournament.
“Good luck,” Cedric said softly after, and she was touched he’d remembered her test in Ancient Runes when he had so much on his plate. She hefted her schoolbag onto her shoulders, as she was always the first to leave, with him waiting a few minutes so not to arouse suspicion.
As she turned to open the glass door that guarded their room, he called out to her. “I love you,” he cried, blurting it out unplanned and after he said it, he realized it was true. Orlina flushed, bowed her head and fled, too shy, too afraid to say it back, not wanting to ruin the moment. She was too startled by his sudden confession that she didn’t know what to say, she didn’t react at all. When they met later, she would tell him she loved him, and her heart swelled as she rushed down the corridor, face flushed.
But they never got a chance to meet. The champions were in meetings, or giving interviews or being prepared by the judges, or else he was in class when she wasn’t and vice versa. But she was there in the stands before the last task, and when he looked up and saw her in the stands she felt as if she would explode from love. Orlina vowed to tell Cedric that she loved him in return the very moment he came out of the maze, tournament winner or not. She was there, cheering him on the entire time, even when time ran over and the crowd grew quiet.
And when she saw Harry Potter slam onto the ground from the exit of the maze, she ran down the stands, feeling as if she were flying. But people were screaming, suddenly, and Cedric’s father was there, too, and she could hear him saying, “My son, my son,” over and over, but anything else was muffled by yelling. There was commotion and she needed to know what was going on.
She had to get down there. She trampled friends and threw slick spells left and right. As Orlina rounded the stands and flew over the remaining five steps, she began to scream Cedric’s name, over and over, trying to get his attention. She didn’t know what was happening. But he was lying on the ground when she got to him, pale and cold. It was too late. Potter was saying something unintelligible, always whining about something. She could kill him. They were all too late, and she wept with sorrow and grief. Orlina hoped he knew.
“I love you,” she whispered, crying, as mediwizards carried him away.
