At that moment, a waiter stopped by, which pleased both of them not to need to leave their seats. Draco looked at the man with careful patience for his heritage and ordered as if nothing were out of the ordinary, “I will have a bellini, and she shall have an aviation, thank you.” He then promptly ignored the man, who took the cue to leave.

“Where were we?” Draco asked Hermione, who still looked flushed. “Ah yes, you were seducing me. Well,” he said with a flourish of his hand, “get back to it.”

Hermione had nothing to say or do until her drink came, so she sat there, blushing while the silence began to lean toward awkward.

“Well, I suppose you Gryffindors never have these sorts of things planned out. I had been planning on discussing work matters to begin with, but you just ruined that idea,” Draco continued the conversation, “Nevertheless I expected a few difficulties. Being restricted to muggle topics was not one I expected to encounter, but I am sure I shall think of something.” At that point, he made eyes with her - not the smug or general cool Malfoy eyes but eyes … eyes that were flirtatious and playful. He was actually doing it…but surely he couldn’t be serious. This was Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger!

But Hermione Granger did not back down, so she made eyes right back at him, determined to beat him at this game. She had better grades than he had in school, destroyed a Horcrux, and even beat him out for a better office in the department. Making eyes, and being better at it, really should have been nothing in comparison. Except Hermione lacked practice because Ron was never this subtle, and Viktor had just come up and swept her off her feet (metaphorically) to ask her to the Yule Ball; the witch had liked others before, but she never really had time for flirting. Schoolwork or work had always been more pressing.

A few drinks later, she had not given up and felt much more relaxed. Conversation had flowed to the topic of famous ‘muggle’ composers who had in fact been wizards.

“Shostakovich!” Draco exclaimed loudly, “how could you think such a genius was a muggle? Really, Hermione. That’s ridiculous! Come on, name all your ‘muggle’ geniuses and find out the truth about them.”

He took a long sip from his rum blazer while she had a layer cake.

“Shakespeare.”

“Wizard.”

“Pushkin.”

“Wizard.”

“Bach.”

“Wizard.”

“Fine, Einstein.”

“Squib.”

Hermione sputtered, “What? But he did physics! Science! His genius isn’t even related to magic.”

“Muggles had a closed mind about everything. Since he grew up in the magical world, his was open. So when he began his theories and all that, his open, more magical mind led him to things no muggle would have accepted if he had not proved it so well,” Draco explained casually. As she fumed in front of him, he listened to the music floating through.

“This song isn’t so bad,” Draco commented.

“It’s by the Dropkick Murphys,” she remarked. Hermione still kept up with some muggle music and liked the band.

“Who?”

“Muggle band.”

“Never mind. I hate it,” Draco said with superiority.

She rolled her eyes, “You’re in a muggle bar. What did you expect?”

“I forgot for a moment,” Draco snapped, “and I like forgetting. Don’t remind me next time.”

Hermione cringed, feeling like she had ruined the great conversation they were having as well as the fledgling friendship that had taken years to get to this point. But a curious look crossed Draco’s face across from her. “What?”

“I was thinking that I should drive you home because it’s getting late,” Draco offered politely.

Hermione sighed, “What time is it?”

“Two thirty,” he replied casually.

The witch rushed to stand up immediately, “Oh my god! I have to meet Harry tomorrow to help him shop for Ginny. It’s their anniversary soon. I’ll never get a good night’s sleep now!”

Draco raised an eyebrow, “Glad to know my company was not worth the time.”

Her eyes widened, “No, I didn’t mean it like that. Seriously, Draco, time flew by. That’s a testament to the fact I enjoyed it. But I do have to get some sleep tonight.”

“Of course,” he replied diplomatically while removing large bills from his wallet, making her cringe. Draco glanced up and smiled, “Don’t worry. It was worth it.”

Her face flushed with color again. And Draco made her blush so easily, every time. The next time was when she was about to open her door and muttered goodnight, but Draco would not let her. “A gentleman always gives a goodnight kiss,” the young man still following impeccable manners told her.

His soft lips pressed against her left cheek first. The second, meant for her right, just reached the edge of her lips, and it tingled intensely. Her mouth opened slightly in shock, and she inhaled, which filled her with his scent - subtle but present, just what she couldn’t say. His lips shifted but stopped directly in front of hers. His eyes were closed, as was proper, she noted before closing hers. Her weight adjusted itself to be more comfortable, and the two mouths met. Hermione was nervous, but Draco pretended not to notice. Unlike Ron, he had restraint and took his time to fully explore her lips and the skin around them before politely but confidently slipping his tongue out of his lips to brush hers. Without thinking, her lips opened, but the touch was gone. Again the soft pink tip ventured out, delving just past hers but retreating again. Hermione knew he had to be doing it on purpose, but the act teased her beyond her patience.

Her hands reached up to his face, one cupping his cheek while the other went into his hair. Together, they pulled him to her, and the kiss deepened to a more comfortable level. But still, the stark differences remained. Draco took his time, gauged her reactions, and acted accordingly - in the fashion she reacted to most. He actually put how she wanted to kiss before whatever way he wanted to kiss. And that alone made her go a little crazy. Somewhere along the way, the witch had clambered into his seat - more comfortable she had told herself at the time. And Draco never pushed her; instead she pushed him for more, not to stop.

But even that did not change the annoyed glare on Harry’s face as she told him over coffee the next morning what had happened. The cream in his coffee had been thoroughly stirred when she got to the end of it - he had promised to keep his mouth shut until the end. Timidly, Hermione waited for his judgment.

“I’m not really sure why you’re asking me,” Harry replied at first, “it’s not like I have the most experience. But I don’t know…I don’t completely trust Malfoy. I feel bad for what he had to do during the war, and he’s been civilized since then but I still don’t think it’s a wise decision to crawl into his bed.”

He was trying his hardest to be polite about it, Hermione could tell. Over the years, she had snapped a few times, whenever Harry or Ron talked rudely about Malfoy. And now she had gone and slept with him - even Harry knew that was a time to be polite about things.

“If you want to be friends, I mean, you know, I guess that’s okay,” he treaded carefully, “but don’t do anything more until you absolutely trust him.”

“I already have done more,” Hermione pointed out as she sipped her tea.

“Then stop doing more,” Harry stated simply, as if the matter were as simple as ‘walk into the Forbidden Forest and let Voldemort kill you.’

“But what if he thinks it was a date? What if he asks me out on another one?”

“Turn him down?” the wizard offered, confused as to what the complication was.

She groaned, “But he’s…it’s…are you sure?”

“Absolutely,” Harry said, finally taking a sip of the coffee.

“So I should dump him?” she squeaked. Hermione had put off dumping Ron for a few months because she couldn’t do it even when the witch knew it was the right thing. Dumping people was hard and hurt her to do - just as much as it hurt them to hear it.

“It’s not really dumping per se,” Harry commented, “but yes, first thing Monday morning.”
