Part I |

Two years later

Subdued laugher could be heard from one of the more secluded leather couches in the Slytherin Common Room. Two people with equally long blonde hair sat close together in one couch.

"I'm serious, Narcissa," Lucius was saying, "You should have seen the mess he made of the potions lab. It looked like a pygmy puff had exploded in there. The mudblood was drenched in the odd, pink, acidic slime, and it was burning through his robes as it slid over him. I have never seen Slughorn move move so quickly, shouting at us to get away before he used a more powerful Aguamenti to wash it off. Not like any water would make a mudblood any cleaner, anyway..."

Stretching, he put his arm over on the back of the couch. What he really wanted was to put his arm around her, but it wasn't seemly to do that just yet. For a 13 year old she was very early developed and so much more mature than even girls in his year and over weren't, but he knew he needed to wait a few years. They would be long years, if his hormones were any judge.

"So, anything interesting happen around you lately, then?" he asked. He trained his silver eyes on her.

Narcissa laughed, though she was enjoying his attention more than she was enjoying the joke. "I do hope he had some robes left at the end of it," she said in amusement, eyes sparkling as she looked at him. "Else you might have been treated to the sight of more mudblood than you would ever want to see."

She was pleased by his gesture, the arm over the back of the couch. He seemed to like talking to her, but he was very reserved when it came to actual shows of any romantic interest, such as his reluctance to touch her. As much as it confused her, she appreciated it; if he had been too forward, she might have been forced to turn him down, and she didn't want to do that. As it was, she was still a bit wary of him, all too aware that he might someday turn his attention to a girl closer to his own age, but she had no intention of giving him any reason to do so, if she could help it. He fascinated her.

Meeting his eyes, she tried to think of something that had happened lately that was more interesting than their conversations, and failed. But she did have one anecdote that would interest him. "Bella sent another victim to the hospital wing," she said, smiling. "Although I doubt you're surprised. Apparently a second-year gave her the evil eye."

Lucius shivered at the idea of even a partially nude mudblood. "Yeah, it covered the essential bits. But he was sent immediately to the hospital wing for the burns. Who knows what he had in that cauldron? It wouldn't surprise me if the daft mudblood accidentally made flesh eating slime instead of what we were supposed to make. You would think he'd know how to make a simple polyjuice potion by now, we're in our second to last year."

This was one of his favourite times a day, when he could just sit and relax, not put on a mask of indifference and act the part of the Malfoy heir. She didn't judge him, and if he said anything untoward she was sure to let him know he'd crossed a line. She was refreshing to be around, not like the other vapid bints that followed his every word and not saying anything that they though he wouldn't approve of.

He noticed the looks and slight glares Narcissa got from the other girls in the Common Room when they were together. Thirteen, and already the most envied girl in Slytherin, if not in the entire school.

Her next words pulled him out of his musings and he responded with a slight chuckle. "No, I'm not surprised. She's a brilliant witch in her own, and not someone you should cross. If you value your health."

Narcissa was amused that she had managed to say something that made him shiver; he wasn't exactly the squeamish type. But she kept that to herself, glad to see that she had an effect on him.

She was aware of the girls that watched her, but she ignored them. She had no desire to lord it over their heads - envy easily bred hatred, and would do so without any help from her. She also doubted that Lucius would appreciate any obvious moves to take advantage of his association, although she thought that he took some pleasure in noticing the way others looked at her when they were together. It wasn't that Narcissa didn't appreciate all of the good things that came with being associated with him, she simply enjoyed his company far too much to risk it.

"Indeed not," Narcissa said, in response to his comment about her sister. She smiled at him, a friendly challenge in her gaze. "You're aware that she's threatened your health if you're cruel to me, aren't you? Not that I've had any complaints, so you needn't worry."

Raising one golden eyebrow, Lucius responded, "Oh really? Well, that's a good thing to know. And I shall do my best to never be intentionally cruel to you." He smiled fondly at her, reaching out to take her hand and press it lightly before releasing it after proper time.

He didn't know what made him take her hand and reassure her he would never intionally cruel to her, it was not something he normally did with any girl he associated with, but Narcissa had come to mean a great deal to him over the last two years they had been close friends. He had only one year left at school, and she still had almost four. His father was intent on Lucius finding a suitable bride to carry on the Malfoy line, but would wait until his son and heir was finished with his schooling. And Narcissa would most likely move on to a boy closer to her age when she became older. But he swore to himself. If any boy would ever hurt her when he was gone, he would hunt him down and make him suffer.

Narcissa knew she was blushing, but she managed to keep her composure, smiling at him. She liked the touch of his hand, and she appreciated the promise. "And I won't be intentionally cruel to you either," she said.

She was partially teasing, but mostly serious. It wasn't that he mistreated her, or that he didn't respect her, but she liked to remind him that she wasn't fragile, or someone to be trifled with. As much as she enjoyed feeling like she was under his protection, her pride would not allow her to let anyone think that she was weak.

Lucius couldn't keep back a small grin at her adorable blush, and was sectetly pleased at her maintaining her composure; most girls would have started to giggle. He knew in that moment she would make a fine pureblood wife to some lucky man.

"I am pleased to hear that, my dear," he responded. "But there was something I wanted to ask you. My father is hosting the annual Christmas ball at the Manor, and I wondered if you wanted to go with me?"

A small flicker of surprise crossed Narcissa's face before she composed herself again. She had already had the pleasure of attending the Christmas ball at Malfoy Manor, and had a strong appreciation for how elite it was. In fact, she had already been looking forward to the ball this year for a while.

Stunned, flattered beyond belief, and incredibly excited despite herself, she was hard pressed to keep from grinning like an idiot. Mouth twitching ever so slightly as her smile attempted to widen, she managed to give her answer in a warm, steady voice. "I would be honored, Lucius," she said, fingertips brushing ever so slightly over his hand in a gesture of gratitude and affection. "I was already planning to ask you for a dance this year, you know."

Lucius noticed her little surprise before it was masked again, and tried not to let her know he did. He didn't exactly like those parties, but he had an a feeling he would like this one.

His father did this every year, but left the decorating up to the house elves with his instructions on how things should look, and it was something new every year. There were many girls who wanted to be on his arm for such an event as this, and she accepted the honor quite well. Ever a young lady, and he really liked that about her, even if he could tell that she was struggling not to grin. He wished she would; it would give him great pleasure to know she was excited to be with him. But her little hand gesture said it loud and clear.

"Wonderful, I'm sure we'll have a great time. These parties can get tiresome." He said with an impish smile. "And I certainly hope that you will give me the pleasure of more than one now that you are my date?"

He winked at her, and Narcissa couldn't no longer help herself; her mouth curved up into a wide, happy smile. So what if she really was more like the other girls in her house, with their crushes and big dreams of marriage, than she liked to think? She was obviously doing something better than them, to rise so high so quickly in Lucius's esteem.

"As many as you like," she said, cheeks a bit pink with her own daring. "And I'll do my best to make sure you are never bored."

As far as she was concerned, Christmas couldn't come fast enough.
