"You're a liar!" little Amy declared. "Nobody can talk to snakes."
"I'm not lying! I can prove it to you. I bet there are some snakes down in that cave by the water," Tom said defiantly.
Dennis had heard the commotion and rushed to Amy's defense. "Leave her alone, Riddle. You're scaring her. She doesn't know you're just teasing."
"But I'm not teasing. I can talk to snakes. If you both follow me to that cave, I'll show you."
Dennis took Amy by the hand. "We're not going down there with you."
"Why not? Are you scared?"
"No!"
"Well then come on." Tom strode off in the direction of the cave, not bothering to look behind him to see if Amy and Dennis were following.
Amy looked questioningly up at Dennis.
"Come on, Amy. Let's just go and get this over with." Dennis followed Tom down to the cave, keeping a firm grip on Amy's hand. When they caught up with Tom, he was standing at the mouth of the cave looking in.
Tom made an odd hissing sound and then waited. Dennis opened his mouth to talk, but Tom raised a hand to stop him. After a few seconds more, a hissing sound came from inside the cave.
"Did you hear that? I talked to the snake and he talked back!" Tom wore a victorious look on his face.
"I didn't hear any such thing! That was just an echo!" Dennis' words were reflected in the look on Amy's face.
Tom scowled at them both. "Fine. Then we'll just have to go in so I can prove it to you." He stepped into the cave, and Dennis and Amy followed.
They walked until they reached a point where the light from outside the cave stopped. Tom made another hissing sound and waited, a smug look on his face. Dennis again opened his mouth to speak, but then he felt something slide over his foot and around his leg. He looked down to find an adder slowly making its way up his leg. Just then, Tom hissed again and a second snake advanced on Amy. Petrified, Amy could do nothing to defend herself except to scream as the snake began to wrap around her. Amy's screams drove Dennis to action. He unwrapped the snake from his own leg and then grabbed the snake that had Amy in its grip. Dennis ran from the cave, dragging a still screaming Amy with him.
By the time Mrs. Cole got to them, Amy was curled up in a ball on the ground, weeping. Dennis stood guard over her.
"Amy, what happened?" Mrs. Cole bent down to caress the girl's hair, but Amy just curled up tighter. Mrs. Cole straightened. "Dennis?"
Dennis made no response, just turned towards the opening of the cave where Tom had just reappeared. Mrs. Cole followed his gaze. "Oh, I see. Dennis, will you please take Amy back up to the rest of the group? I need to have a talk with Tom."
Dennis coaxed Amy up to her feet and led her away. Mrs. Cole stood watching Tom as he leisurely made his way up to her.
"Tom, I'd like to speak with you."
Tom looked up innocently. "Yes, Mrs. Cole?"
"What did you do to Amy and Dennis?"
"I don't know what you mean. I didn't do anything to them. I was down in that cave."
Mrs. Cole gave an exasperated sigh. "Tom, I don't know what I'm going to do with you."
Tom simply smiled and walked back up the slope.
