Susan was the lookout. Getting past the House Elves was no easy task, and they had been caught many times before. This time, however, they had it figured out.
Justin watched the time closely. Everything needed to go at the precise moment. He gave his friends a nod and sprang into action. The two boys crawled into the kitchen. There was exactly a 37 second break that left the kitchen empty. Being quick and careful, they filled their robes with pastries and sweets.
Susan giggled as they crawled back out. “Really, Ernie, is this proper behavior for a Prefect?”

“Minerva, I simply cannot understand why you seem so determined to close down the school. We all know that Albus, were he here, would support my position. In fact, up until five minutes ago, I would have been under the assumption that you would have as well.” Pomona Sprout was visibly frustrated-something new for those who knew her to see and experience.
“Pomona, it is not that I do not understand your position. As an educator, I understand it is our duty, even in difficult times, to ensure-“
“Especially in difficult times, Minerva. Especially in times like these!”
“-To ensure that students are able to learn the skills necessary to be successful and survive. However, our school has been attacked! A member of the faculty! If we cannot protect ourselves and each other, how can we expect to protect the students?”
Sprout calmed down some as she pondered the words of her friend and colleague. Her point was indeed valid, but she still felt a loyalty to the school and a duty to her students that she felt was hard to shake.
“Minerva, if a single pupil-one single student-wishes to attend, I will be here to teach. I think it fair to give the faculty a choice of whether or not to stay, just as it should be the choice of our students’ families if they continue to attend. But we must not forget our primary duty, the responsibility with which we have been entrusted coming all the way down from the Founders themselves.”
McGonagall was silent, a look of concern moving across her face. “I daresay, Pomona, but I have already polled the faculty. You would have to teach 3 subjects each, those of you staying, to continue offering even the essential subjects.”
“Then that’s what we will do! We will send out queries to some of the greatest scholars of the wizarding world and pleas for others to come and join us. But personally, I will not be able to rest if Hogwarts closes its doors.” Sprout plopped herself down in the Headmaster’s chair.
McGonagall stood by the door, staring quietly at her friend. After a lengthy pause that seemed even longer to them both, she walked up to the desk. “Come along, Pomona. If anyone is going to come join us here, we had best start getting the requests out by Owl as soon as we can.”
“You mean?”
“Yes, Hogwarts is staying open.”
