There have been many theories about why Rowena Ravenclaw picked an eagle to be the animal representation for her house. Some speculated that it was related to animagus forms, or being able to speak to the creature, but definitely not because of her name, as otherwise a raven would have been picked. Some speculated that it was to represent air, in the way that lions are for fire, snakes are for water and badgers are for earth. Others thought it was to do with the bird representing strength, power, and flying high. All of this, merely circumstantial. What really happened, was that Rowena Ravenclaw was told to pick a bird by the other founders, due to her tower being the highest point in the school, and not wanting to pick a raven, she thought she'd pick the first bird that she saw. Turns out, that was a Crowned Eagle, which seemed to be fate, as the Eagle became crowned on the Hogwarts coat of arms for the duration of the school's existence.
