Godric Gryffindor sat with his head in his hands at his enormous oaken desk, listening to the owls hooting outside and watching a large spider make its way across the floor. Usually he’d turn spiders into chipmunks for transfiguration practice, but today he was too discouraged. Why Salazar? he thought. Why have you changed?
The disagreements had escalated over the past few months. He had noticed Salazar’s increasing reluctance to admit Muggle-borns into the school, but initially it was just a look on his face; an imperceptible sneer, barely curling the ends of his mouth. At times Godric even wondered if he had imagined it. No such luck.
In the following weeks, Salazar became more and more vocal about his distaste for these students being sorted into Slytherin's house, at first unenthusiastically allowing them in the dungeons, and now refusing to allow them in at all, even though they were clearly best suited for it. As usual, Helga was a mediator, taking those students into Hufflepuff when no other house would do, and sparks were beginning to fly in the common room. The would-be Slytherin students were cold to the other Hufflepuffs, complaining about being so close to the kitchens, which they felt were too common for their sensibilities.
He exhaled sharply into the frigid winter air (absent-mindedly puffing his frosty breath into the form of a chipmunk without meaning to), rubbed his hands together, and then waved his wand toward the fireplace. In an instant, the room was filled with warmth, but his heart still felt the chill of doubt. He wondered if Professor Slytherin was also starting a fire in his own chambers to keep the December air at bay, or if their heated conversation that morning in the great hall had made him impervious to the cold.
