They told him that he should tag along
As a chance to see old friends.
But all he sees that night is the sun in her cheeks
And the stars in her eyes
As she flits through the party,
Dazzling them all.

When her eyes are on him,
He feels like he’s become the world-
And he temporarily becomes her world, so isn’t that
Enough?

It should be impossible that she should notice him fleeing,
But each time he tries to slink away…

“Remus, come now, stay a little longer.”

Well. If she insists.

And as the clock ticks closer to midnight,
He feels like he is her world
But there’s only so long he can tell himself that.
Because he’s her world when her eyes are on him,
But her eyes aren’t on him.
Not unless he’s trying to run away.

(So he tries again, and again.)

10: he downs a butterbeer like it’s his last saving grace.
9: he catches James’s eye and
8: he realizes he’s got to look away because
7: James’s got that fond, proud grin and he’s already
6: hanging onto her with his arm draped over her shoulder like
5: he’s trying to crawl into her skin.
4: (not that he can blame him)
3: James whispers in her ear and
2: he catches just enough for his stomach to twist before
1: the room fills with raucous shouts of

“Happy new year,” he mumbles to no one in particular.

He’s surprised by her lips on his cheek, soft and smooth
And he nearly turns to catch her mouth with his own
Before he remembers himself.

“Happy new year, Remus,” she sings.

He runs away soon after
And she doesn’t notice.
