It was Saturday afternoon and the sun was blazing brightly with no clouds in sight. Despite the unusually fantastic weather, he had to practically drag her out of the Common Room, where she was curled up on the couch. But once she was out in the fresh air, she was unstoppable. Neville had to run to catch up with her once the idea popped into her head. Ten minutes later, they were standing in the center of the deserted Quidditch Pitch.

"You've never done this?" Ginny asked, her leg hanging in midair as she was so shocked, so stopped mounting her broom. He shrugged and looked down at his feet. Embarrassed, he kicked the grass beneath him, regretting that he even came out here with her. This wasn't the plan originally. He just wanted her to get out of the castle.Neville knew that everyone saw him as kind of a bumbling fool. He knew that people would snicker about his forgetfulness and clumsiness. He wasn't an idiot. But this last year, with so many students missing, he had begun to earn the respect of others.

It wasn't intentional. There was just an emptiness in the Gryffindor Common Room with Harry missing. It was noticeable and everyone ached for leadership. Harry was like a symbol for the anti-You Know Who movement. When he teamed up with Hermione, the smartest person in the entire school, and Ron, who was very charming, they became a powerhouse. All three were gone now.

Ginny was eager to step into that roll, as a pillar of hope. She was the first to stand up to Professor Carrow. That meant she was also the first to receive detention the likes of which no one had seen since Professor Umbridge had resided there. Accidentally, Neville had become part of her team. It meant people were starting to reform their opinions of him. Or, at least, he hoped they were.

It was rare that they ever had a chance to have fun anymore. Ginny was all about the fight. He could feel the passion and anger bleeding out of her even just passing her in the hall. It was his suggestion that they go outside but he hadn't meant Quidditch practice. Quidditch had been disbanded, of course. All after school clubs had. But students could still occasionally ride broomsticks on the Quidditch Pitch on the weekend.

Neville knew that if he got up on a broomstick, he would just make a fool of himself. He knew Ginny wouldn't laugh at him, but she would pity him and that was worse.

Ginny swung her leg back to the ground and placed her broomstick upright, leaning against it. She appraised Neville and the broom he held in his hands like it was about to explode.

"You took flying lessons when you were a first year, right?" she asked. He nodded in agreement and couldn't help but smile at the memory.

"I didn't get to do much flying, though" he admitted. "Harry kind of stole the show and we all got grounded while Professor McGonagall dragged him away."

"How many times have you been on a broom?" she continued.

Neville just shrugged. "I guess may five times at the most," he told her, starting to feel less embarrassed due to the way she was treating him. She was still talking to him like a normal person.

"I used to have to sneak out of the house and steal my brothers' brooms to practice flying. They were so stuck up about girls not being very good at Quidditch so I was always determined to prove them wrong." She walked over to Neville and placed her hand on his shoulder. "But it's not for everyone and we don't have to go flying if you don't want."

It was nice of her to offer, but now that they were out here, he felt like it was something he wanted to do. He shook his head and gripped the broomstick tighter. "No, I'll have to learn sometime, right?" He smiled at her. "Now's a good as time as any."

"Great," she said. "I'll go easy on you," she promised, but her grin made her a little hard to believe. "You'll be a pro by the end of the month. Guaranteed." Ginny was already up on her broom, hovering a few inches off the ground. Now it was his turn to smile at her, though in a less devious way. It seemed his plan had worked after all. She was totally focused on teaching him to fly that she was already planning on coming out here again. No more moping in the Common Room. This would be good for both of them.
