I like this backstory SO MUCH better than the one JKR provided for her! (JKR's version made Umbridge very much a Slytherin... but extremely unsympathetic).

I didn't even know there was an "official" backstory for Umbridge now, honestly. (I kinda hate how JKR keeps adding these things about characters at random. It's like...you wrote the books, it's done. I also don't really trust her to make antagonists well-rounded people, so... I'm also a Canon Purist lol.) I actually went and looked up the official background on wiki since you mentioned it and now I kinda want to write a fic with that scenario, because I think that can involve some really interesting if completely messed up family dynamics.

Definitely seconded on this -- this gives her an utterly tragic air which is gorgeous. (And I love the transformation from Dolly to Dolores. Love. It.)
