FICLET CHALLENGE 97: Drift
Title: Drift
Summary: Before the kaiju came roaring out of the Atlantic, they tested for drift-compatibility.

Britain-- the whole of the United Kingdom, even-- was supposed to be safe. Wizards were supposed to be safe. But they should have known that as soon as the kaiju began attacking the Pacific region, some enterprising dark wizard would take notice, and then try to take advantage.
Hermione did. She anticipated it. It was she who brought up bringing the jaeger program to the Ministry of Magic. She'd naturally been following the developments as Muggle liaison, but it was also through her that the Ministry allowed for the use of magic, disguised as advanced Muggle technology, to assist the current efforts of Muggles in fighting the kaiju.
Muggles already knew how to get the jaegers to function through neural commands, but Hermione set to work on reinforcing the jaegers for protection themselves.
"They're still too flimsy in battle," she said, "and the kaiju are getting stronger."
Using a combination of arithmancy and runic charms, she began conducting tests on strengthening the armor, but got stuck at a crucial step in the process for three whole days before one of Luna's crackpot theories ("why don't you make use of the full moon when you're incantating? Moonlight is a brilliant binder of magic.") turned out to not be so crackpot a theory after all.
With the two of them doing research, Shacklebolt called upon the rest of Dumbledore's Army to do drift compatibility tests. Harry had expected to be paired up with Ron or Ginny, but he and Ron were too slow, he and Ginny too out of sync. It was, surprisingly, Neville Longbottom who proved to be most compatible with Harry in the drift. (Though it was Ron who named their jaeger Orphan Leo.)
Ron and Ginny, having spent a similar amount of time in perpetual terror of their five older brothers, were also much more compatible with each other than they were with Harry. (Ginny refused to name their jaeger anything ginger, but they ended up with Ginger Hex anyway.)
The rest of the DA paired up as well, with varying levels of success. Parvati and Lavender. Angelina and George. Justin and Ernie. Michael and Zacharias (Jaeger name: Feral Bristle, but which Ron and Ginny refer to as Arsehats Anonymous behind their backs).
It was a lot of jaegers for a small island on the other side of the war, but they trained hard and they deployed jaegers where they could.
And when the war came to them, they were ready.
